OK, has anyone any thoughts on the latest offerings from Microsoft (Bill Gates) I received an email yesterday offering this brilliant operating system for download. So my questions are:- 1. Should I upgrade 2. Would I benefit upgrading from Windows XP 3. I do download a lot of music 4. I dont use it for much else really, besides annoying everybody on here

It will depend on how old your current machine is. From what I have heard a minimum of 1GB of memory is needed. The minimum memory needed for video and sound has gone up also. Vista is suppose to utilize duo core processors.
I have a 1.8GB duo core processor, 1GB of ram and 100GB hard drive and I don't plan on upgrading unless I absolutely have to. Or at least until after they release their second major software upgrade for Vista.

Do a lot of research on "Vista Content Protection". There is a lot of buzz going around about this security feature. There are a lot of varied opinions as well as to what exactly you can and cannot copy using Vista. I would not switch over anyway until at least a year on the market so they can get their 40-50 required security and update patches available that are always inevitable for Windoze. UNIX - A true virtual community, no windows or gates needed. Anyway, a lot of IT folks I know believe, as I do at this moment in time, that Vista's content protection schemes may be the final straw for Microsoft and will allow Apple to grow into the primary consumer OS of the world, as it deserves to be. It will also allow for growth of the others such as Linux and also Java in an open structure.

I am running at the moment AMD Athlon 64 processor 3500+ 1GB of Ram and 300GB of HD, graphics card is not fantastic, but it is alright for what I want.
Reading the article, I will sit on the fence for wee while, until they sort it all out and the vendors get the drivers etc out for it.

I'm waiting. Heck, I just upgraded from Win2kPro to XP Pro last year. I'm definitely waiting until all (well, most of) the bugs are worked out of Vista, cuz I guarantee there are plenty of bugs they haven't found yet.

Geez, I'm going back to a Mac when it's time to replace my laptop. This Windows stuff is for the birds. I guess it's what I get for cheaping out last time I bought a computer.

If you buy a new computer that comes with Vista, you may want to consider buying a Mac instead. You have to learn a new OS either way. We have an MSDN (MicroSoft Developers Network) subscription and downloaded all the versions Thursday as we will have to start testing the CPS (Customer Programming Software) that we develop here for the Motorola portable and mobile radios. What's cool is, I get to order all sorts of new PCs to run Vista on! I've been playing with the beta and release candidate versions of Vista for about 6 months and it does look cool but if you want the full bang, you need one of the latest PCs with at least 1GB of RAM and definitely a video card that supports heavy graphics. On my personal machines, I will wait until well after the first service pack to upgrade. btw, I understand Microsoft is already working on this!

Is very simple. Is you unit doing what you need it to do now? If so, you don't need Vista. M$ comes out with new stuff to keep its fingers in your wallet. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
I would also wait till service pack 4 zillion comes out. You know M$ always Beta test on its end users after charging for software that doesn't work the first time.

Not me!! I'm tired of Windows and Bill Gates. It seems everytime I fire up the computer it's downloading "updates". How good can it be if you have to constantly keep improving it?
It's coming time for a new computer and I've been pricing iMac's. That's the route for me.

The copyright BS that all the buzz speaks of about Vista concerns me.
Next time I buy a new PC.....my old one will remain for all my movie backup/copy/music duplication efforts.
Beware. Hollywood and Bill Gates dont want you to be able to use a windows platform for copying anything.
I have heard that HD DVD has already been hacked ...not sure about blu-ray. But I do no one thing ...its only a matter of time before both HD formats are hacked. Billy boy and hollywood just want to make it as difficult as possible.

Not that I would know anything about this stuff, but copying DVD and such is supposed to be really easy...unless you have Vista. I also heard there is a site that explains a lot of this After Dawn forum for all your video copying needs

Me neither Pat. But I sure wish I could duplicate HD DVD or blu-ray discs on my home PC. The cost of those HD and blu-ray discs is prohibitive at this point. I can see how it would be easier to rent them and burn them. But then again the cost of blank discs for that genre is still cost prohibitive anyway. I dont yet have an HD DVD player or a Blu-ray player. They both cost to doggone much and I want to wait and see which format wins the war.
I have seen a few titles in stores (HD DVD and blu-ray) and I dont think I could ever go back to a plain old standard def player once I get either one.

1. Only if you have lots of cash to toss away and maybe 4 gig of ram.
2. Only if you really enjoy debugging stuff for free. MS beta test is what other companies call alpha. MS first release is what other companies call beta test.
3. XP Pro and Mozilla Firefox will deal with downloads quite well. And Firefox is more secure than MS IE.
4. In that case anything except maybe windoze laMe Edition would serve quite well. Well, maybe not win 2.x, they never did get that to work.

I went to CompUSA about 3 years ago to try out a laptop PC. None of them were hooked up to try for fear of viruses. When I asked ALL the sales people what to buy they said a mac. When they needed to hook up to the internet, they all used a mac hiding in the back room. I bought an iBook G4...still works great... never crashes. Liked it so much I bought a macMini and hooked it up along side my PC. After about 6 months I had no reason to use the PC anymore (I think I needed to be weaned more than anything) After 1 1/2 years I gave it to my daughter... works great never crashes. Now I have a 20" iMac core 2 duo... it's awesome. Forget Bill Gates, he's gotten where he is by ripping off other people's ideas - vista is just a clone of OSX

I upgraded yesterday* to Vista Home Premium version...but I agree for most there is really no need to upgrade. I had a 2.5 year old machine and I wanted to "refresh it" without buying another. I bought a $60 graphic card and everything works great so far. The machine I upgraded is a HP Pentium 4 2.8 with 1.5GB memory. I feel like I have a NEW machine (especially with the 22" screen I got for Christmas!...ok bought it myself!).
Believe it or not, I think I am good for another 2 years till I need to buy a new computer...and that is unheardof these days. Unexpected benefit...it nows connects to my Xbox 360. Pretty neat.
Side note: The comparison of Apple versus Microsoft are pointless for me and getting old. I used to be a Mac bigot since I owned numerous macs and actually developed application software for them for many years...and thought Microsoft owners were stupid. I switched to Microsoft to build my computer skills for my customers...and frankly, you get comfortable with what you have a need for or experience with...
*I'm not one to "wait till the bugs clear". I guess being an ex-software developer...I expect them and enjoy the coming up with workarounds. I never expected perfection when it comes to software.

Santa brought me a Tivo
It runs Linux
Linux good
Yup
I held off on XP as long as I could, then bought some laptops with XP Pro aboard. My prop hat buddies told me I'd like XP, and I do. Hopefully Vista will be the same sort of release, but I'll let y'all figure that out. I'm a little short on cuss words to take on a new OS. I suppose the old rule of thumb holds true - the newer your hardware, the better chance of running a new OS.
I still run some DOS apps at work, and won't give them up - no how, no way. (I loves me some DOS - never had a computer lock up or balk using DOS) I went so far as to find a little helper app to print from ancient DOS apps to new fangled laser printers.

Recent news from Apple: If you have an iPod and use iTunes, WAIT before upgrading to Vista. The current software is NOT compatible with Vista. They hope to have a upgrade fix you can download within a few weeks.
Or, this might be a good time to get a Mac and leave the rest of the "hogs" behind.
