I got a big bore kit for Christmas (thanks Janet!) and I immediately started planning on ways to acquire the rest of the funds to get r done! About three days after Christmas, I opened an envelope from Motorola. WooHoo! It was an award check to the tune of $700!!! Just for grins, I talked to Pure Triumph and worked out a deal for them to do it. I am happy to report, Raven is back in the garage now with a big bore kit, exhaust cam advanced one tooth, new clutch (Barnett), and 45 pilots. All for the grand sum of $649 out of pocket expenses, including the cost of the big bore!! So that award check paid for most of the labor and parts. A very happy camper here!! Hey Pat, bring it on!!!! You'd better get those carbs done before GA 'cause you ain't gonna be running away from me anymore!!

Cool to see someone else take the plunge with advancing the exhaust cam, I've been very happy with that little mod! Congrats!!

Mailed them yesterday. Seriously though, I took this route to minimize the downtime. Bill Gately did the machine work and what we did was cross ship a BB kit with bored jugs coming down and mine going up. Less than a week all told!

I'm doing my big bore as we speak. I have the motor torn down partially. I've removed the exhaust, carbs, cams, cam tensioner, all I have left to do is pull the head and barrels. Gotta finish the teardown before the stupor-bowel.

Advancing the exhaust cam one tooth? what will that do? is this just big bore mod, or will it bring some more fire to the liitle bore motors as well?

Phil, you must feel bl##dy great at the moment, so well done. I was just interested though, what deal does someone have to do with a Triumph Dealer to save about half of what was expected just 3 months ago?
in this thread at the bottom.
Anyway, maybe you are getting close to wearing that elusive belt held by your nemesis, or is that the mentor who is already working on Mikuni's to take it all to the next level? Great stuff

This is for anything but the 865 motors, which already have reduced overlap. On your 790cc motors it reduces the overlap 15 degrees which gives you more midrange power. Just do a search in this forum using the keyword "advance", and it'll pull up quite a few threads where it's discussed.

Thanks for resurrecting this thread Kenny as I have an update!
I FINALLY got 500 on her so I did a valve job (5 shims), chain adjust, spark plugs, oil change and this time, I changed the cam cover gasket. Took her out for a shake down and after warming her up good, I just HAD to nail her for the first time after the BB. Without a dyno (it's coming), I am VERY happy. I am just glad I have a backrest as the power coming on at around 4500 - 5000 is HOLY CRAP!
Looks like I have to do a little carb adjusting though. My current setup has a bit of a power dip (aka, flat spot) around 4800 - 5000rpm. I may try shimming the TBS needles or a fatter main but I will wait for tomorrow's run to figure it out. I've only got 10 miles on the maintenance work. I HATE working.

300 miles later, she is running great. Ran through all typical scenarios (fast run-up, slow crawls, extended highway speeds, fast passing, etc.) and I am very happy. Once I get back from Daytona, I will install the mods on Janet's bike and we will both go get some numbers. Dyno is free for her via the Dynojet kit at participating shops so I will get mine done at the same time.

heh, heh. That was fun, eh? Don't know which models but we were all at a light on US1 south of New Smyrna Beach (wide open 4 lane with a grass median). We were on the inside lane and they were on the outside. Well, they decided to show us Triumphs what for and that was just wrong. I let her rip and they quickly turned to little tiny dots in my mirrors. Shoot, had to drop to 40 (65mph zone) for awhile to let everyone catch up.

so a 904'd bonnie will smoke a VTX? 1300 or 1800?
My buddy has a 1300 but I've never ridden with him. It looks heavy enough to be slow...

I didn't even look. Perhaps one of the others can tell us?
They took off like their arses were on fire and that just got my blood up. Passed them going into third and didn't let off until I hit fifth.

Yeah I'm all excited too On sunday I turned right onto a 4 lane devided road and hit it. There was a Mini CooperS behind me and I think once he saw me hit it, he did too. I kept it at about 70ish and he passed me going pretty fast! So I got the impression that he was trying to take me. Anyway, we were both stopped at the next light, side by side. I didn't rev the motor or anything, but we both took off. No contest. Again, he passed me going FAST as I slowed down approaching the next intersection, and he pulled into the left turn lane. So I got in the left lane and slowed way down and blipped the throttle as I went by the open window Not sure why, but it was satisfying.

The 1300 VTX horsepower to torque ratio is nearly linear. HP in the 70s and torque in the 70s. The VTX is heavier though with a longer stroke.
Would be an interesting race, the BB would not have an easy win IMHO.
