Sounds like you got it. What I heard from bad speedo guys was that the little plastic gears were not greased at all from the factory, or at dealer setup - whoever was supposed to do it didn't! But with no grease the plastic gears would quickly start to crack and then break into little bits never to work again. And of course you need to replace the entire speedo to get 3¢ worth of new gears.
