I've heard of several speedos going bad and this is exactly what happened just before they totally died.
Speedometer cables went "gonzo" or indicated higher speeds before failing the first couple of years (mine included), based solely from the number of posts here. I once was going 60 mph in a 25 zone, but nobody noticed. I later pulled into a local gas station doing 70 mpg. When I pulled back onto the road I was doing 0 mph. Don't know for sure, but I thought most had to do with the fitting on the lower end?? Most cable failures seemed to be replaced under warranty.
I don't remember seeing much comment since the 04-05 model year or so? I wonder if Triumph fixed the part? What year is your speedie SRS?
