Friends-

Total idiot question here. I am thinking about getting buckhorn bars for the ol' speedy. The objective here is to add a little style and lean the riding position back a little bit. My question is 1) what exactly are bar end weights supposed to do? and 2) is that a required addition to buckhorn bars.

This is a picture Grump posted with the bars with weights.

I might also add that Grumps bike looks great with those bars.

Thanks for the kudos.

The bar end weights add a little mass to the bars, they are not necessary for the installation of buckhorns or any other bars.

Shortly after I installed the buckhorns, I noticed the dreaded "front wheel wobble on decel" if I took my hands off the bars. I did a lot of research here and elsewhere and concluded that the reduced weight of the buckhorns might be the cause. I considered a Bar Snake, but it wouldn't work with all the bends and crimps in the buckhorns. I considered lead shot, but I didn't really want to buy a 25 lb. bag of the stuff. So I found and tried the Manic Salamander bar end weights.

Turns out I had a cupped front tire....

The weights give you a little more room to move your hands around, they are chrome ( ), and they give you a little more leverage at slow/no speed. And, they are an alternative to figuring out how to install your stock endcaps, since aftermarket bars don't have the threaded inserts crimped in them......

So what I'm hearing is that the weights are supposed to help with vibration, solve the endcap problem and give you more room.

Hmm. I guess I'll look at the weights. As to the chrome however- I am planning on powdercoating mine black. Black bars, black weights, but the kuryakin isogrips. Should look pretty tough on the old speedy.

Thanks for the answer

Any chance they just sell an insert so you can bolt end caps to them?

By the way I saw them in black, so no need to powdercoat.
