The bar end weights add a little mass to the bars, they are not
necessary for the installation of buckhorns or any other bars.
Shortly after I installed the buckhorns, I noticed the dreaded "front wheel wobble on decel" if I took my hands off the bars. I did a lot of research here and elsewhere and concluded that the reduced weight of the buckhorns might be the cause. I considered a Bar Snake, but it wouldn't work with all the bends and crimps in the buckhorns. I considered lead shot, but I didn't really want to buy a 25 lb. bag of the stuff. So I found and tried the Manic Salamander bar end weights.
Turns out I had a cupped front tire....
The weights give you a little more room to move your hands around, they are chrome (

), and they give you a little more leverage at slow/no speed. And, they are an alternative to figuring out how to install your stock endcaps, since aftermarket bars don't have the threaded inserts crimped in them......
