It was 3 degrees at my house this morning. Thank God power came back on at 8:30 last night. I was out of power for 24 hours and the house was getting cold in spots. The wood stove was fighting a losing battle. I'm lucky power came on before the pipes froze. This ice storm is making life miserable in southern NH. I hope everyone affected is ok.

And here I am complaining about the 21 degrees that hit us yesterday morning. My next door neighbor had a pipe burst for the watering system for his yard and it sprayed enough through a vent to my garage to leave some standing water around my drill press.
Pipes were bursting all over town. Alltel, our cellphone provider, had some water damage in their offices that damaged some equipment so we were without service yesterday.

Well my truck weighs about 500 lbs more than usual since it's compeletly encased in ice. Actually everything around my house has at least 1/2 inch of ice including vertical portions of the roof. The power hasn't flickered though which is good. But the woodstove has kept the house at 75 even last night. I knew it was cold this morning when the polar bear wanted to come back in before I went to work. The ice is annoying her since she cant dig through it to make another hole in my lawn.

One of the buyers in our purchasing department had the misfortune of a major pipe burst and her house was immersed in three inches of water. She had to move out while repairs are being made.
Thats what I call a major bummer.

Same over here in Dinkville. It's about 12ºF right now but the sun is out and alll the ice on the trees really is beautiful. I'm gonna go out and get some nice pictures of it later. I'm lucky and the power is still on, living in the same grid as the hospital has several advantages, constant or first to be repaired power is at the top of the list. Geez, I wanted to work on the carbs this weekend (wed/thur is my weekend) but crimees, it's friggin cold in the garage and handling cold metal parts at sub freezing temps is not my idea of a fun day off. Maybe I'll just have a few beers instead. At least they are cold....

I know how you guys feel. When I awoke this morning it was 59, and it is only supposed to hit around 67 today. Thankfully, we will be back into the upper 70's before the ride this weekend. Whew! Ride or ski safe! Ryan

Ryan, you'd better bring your cold weather gear. I hear it might make it down to the low 50s! Stay warm up there, eh!!

I don't feel so bad listening to you guys. It's been below freezing for 3 days and the roads have been iced up. Problem is Austin has very little winter road maintenance capability-we use it every 5 or so years-so everyone get's stuck at home. When I used to travel for work, this amount of ice was nothing in places equipped to deal with it, but when most people don't know how to drive in it and the streets are mostly ice, not much you can do.
I went through the garage this morning and I swear my America snarled at me and said, "Don't even think about it-take the truck."

And speaking of pipes bursting...Guess which BA.com member presently situated in L.A. just got a call this morning telling him that there was water rushing from his house in Prescott AZ.
Well, I guess it's back to Arizona for the remaining of my 2 weeks of vacation.
Our neighbors there just sent us a few email pics of what it looks like. It doesn't look too bad, but I'll let you know how bad it really is when I get there tonight.

Sorry to hear that Dwight. At least you have the neighbors looking out for your house. Hope the damage isn't too bad and your homeowners insurance covers it.

Gunnison was the coldest place I've ever been to. I remember for 3 or 4 straight days it was -35 every morning.

Hmmm. Bad news. Lots of this going on in Tucson in the last 48 hours alone. I'd be personally pissed if it happened and I would want the hide of the sumbeech contractor who did the substandard work. There are building codes and processess they are supposed to follow even in warm climes when it comes to plumbing.

Talked to Dwight on the phone earlier, and he said the problem might have been the lack of heat in the house. He said they normally shut it off completely when they aren't there.
Now I have no idea about plumbing codes or how much, if any, insulation is supposed to be installed around water supply lines. It sure doesn't seem like they require any in Tucson from looking at my house being built 6 years ago.

Dwight,
Sorry to hear you house in Arizona has water problems.
In New England we always leave the heat on low when we go on vacation. The only problem occurs if the power goes out and you're not home. Most homes in New England have basements for the boilers or furnace so the pipes don't freeze. The pipes in the wall should be insulated. Sometimes outside water valves will freeze so we shut them off in the winter to avoid that problem.

The forecast high today and tomorrow is a few degrees above freezing for a change. Fri and Sat it is supposed to snow and then we get a heatwave Sunday with a 43 degree high and 25 low. Glad to hear that ice storm lost some of its punch after leaving here. We got all our trees trimmed and flocked for free when it came though. The dairy I go by on the way to town has a row of evergreens that held up quite well, so I think we are going to plant some when it warms up. After 2 trips to town and parking in the sun for 3 days, my truck still has icecicles hanging from the edges.

Lucky soul that I am, one check for two hundred clams and problem fixed. COULD HAVE BEEN a whole hell of a lot worse. The master bath's toilet's incoming water line burst, but was easily fixed by the plumber with him cutting a hole in the garage's ceiling beneath. And surprising very little damage was done by the broken pipe. So everybody out there...just in case you were wondering....The Southwest Triumph Fest(thanks Bob) is STILL ON for May!!! Cheers, Dwight

Mark the date 1-18-07 first measurable snow fall in Southern New England arrived today at 4:00 PM..
New Hampshire and Maine are really going to get it one week late for the Mid-Winter Rally figures.

Snow has changed over to a semi-freezing rain here. If the temp drops the morning ride to work could be ugly.

Thats incredible. I was thinking only this morning as i walked from the car to the office. Finally its cooling down enough to go riding. I think this will be the first day in weeks that it has not hit the upper 90s.
And you guys have ice and snow

Yeah, but I was just thinking the other day with all this cooler weather (and finally several days in a row or a couple weeks in a row with almost NO rain forecast), "gee, winter's only a few weeks away around here!!"

The no rain thing really snuck up on me. I was wondering why the garden looked awful and then I remembered we haven't got rain in 3 weeks.

ah no worries my friend. No credits need be given for Winter. I have it on good authority that "GOD" created winter and he is ambivalent as far as wanting to take credit for it as he gets so many gripes from folks living in the frozen tundra areas of Norteamericano land.
He usually tries to bleme winter on the "Devil"
