DIY tools for cam removal

Has anyone figured out what size pins & spanner wrench you need to pull the cams? I'm overdue to adjust the valves and I know I'll have to chance shims...I just want all the tools at hand.

A 5/32" pin punch should work nicely. I used a large nail last time, which worked OK, but the tapered roll pins look like they would work far better. I already had mine buttoned up by the time I figured this out so my pin-punch idea is untested. Sears had them a few weeks after my job for $2 each and they appeared to measure up nicely to the holes.

Can't remember the sizes, I think one hole was 6mm, the other in the backlash gear either 4 or 5mm. I found a machine screw that would just go through big hole, and turned the end down on a belt sander so the tip would go through the small hole. Was uneven enough that I could give it a twist and it would take slack out of backlash gear and wedge firmly in hole.

Do what Lonzo suggested. Take a bolt and just grind one end down a bit. It's really not a big deal at all. That's all I use for mine and everyone elses. Member BUDWEISER (Thanks BUD!) made them and sent them to me and I bet he has at least 9 cents tied up in em.
You can also just stick an allen wrench in each hole. As soon as you loosen the cam caps, the backlash tightens and grips the tool so don't sweat it falling out at that point.

I didn't like how loose the allen wrench was, so I stuck in a screw with a zip tie to keep the cams in place. Uh, bad idea. The cams are under some pretty serious tension and snapped back on the plastic zip tie enough to sever and move the cam gear. I had one hell of a time getting the cams back.

I'd love to test the pin punch as the tapered measurements worked out very close to the actual hole sizes. To be safe, I should probably have a hole drilled in each pin punch end to slip in a pin to keep it from falling out. On second thought, it's probably a hell of a lot easier to just grind down some bolts.....
