Yesterday I started to replace the rear brake pads when I found out to my dismay that one of the rear brake caliper retaining pins was stripped. I took off the metric hex socket bit and tried a SAE but it was of no use. With all the knowledge out there hopefully someone will have an answer on how to remove the pin. I contacted my local Truimph dealer a 1 1/2 hour drive to order a replacement pin. Hopefully by Thursday the shipment will come in and it will be a good day for a ride. The only idea I have is to use one of my oversided hex socket and maybe put it on my grinder or file it down so that it would fit. I will not attempt anything until I get the replacement pins in hand. Has anyone run into this problem if so what was the fix. The mechanic at the Triumph was out to lucnh so I haven't had a chance to ask him what he would do. Any help would be apprecitated

I almost had this problem. I have the chrome caliper covers and they prevent a standard socket-mounted hex bit from seating completely in the head of the pin. I bought new pins and a longer socket-mounted hex bit.
Removal is the standard procedure - try everything you can think of then heat, beat, chisel, drill......

If you can find an imperial one that'll almost fit in you can try hammering it into the pin. This of course will total the pin and probably the hex key too. You can try the same trick with a screwdriver that's slightly too big to fit across the hex. Put a small amount of copper based grease on the threads of the new one before you refit it so it doesn't happen again.

Dennis,
I had the same problem with my rear caliper. The retaining pins stripped and I couldn’t get them out. Tried everything, even a bolt extractor. It snapped on me. I ended up having to replace my rear caliper because I couldn’t remove the pins. If you do get them out, put new pins in and ALWAYS use anti-seize on the bolts whenever you remove them. Keeps it from happening again. Good luck.

I appreciate the help with this issue but have a question for Sandmann. I like to know what an imperial is? I have never hear of it or maybe here in the states we call it something different. Hopefully I will get the replacement and be able to replace the pin. Will let everyone know the outcome.

Aussies have two types of measurements. Metric and Imperial (anything connected with inches).

It has been 3 weeks since I have ordered the caliper pins. The not so local Truimph dealer has yet to get them in. I will stil update all when I get the calipe pins and change them out. Will let everyone know of the outcome.

Finally I received my caliper retaining pins. For the last 3 weeks while I was waiting for my replacements to come I applied liquid wrench several times. I figured that it could not hurt. Replacement went smoother than I had anticipated. I took an old hex allen wrench and hand filed it down so that it would almost fit tightly. This took about an hour or so. I hammered in the allen wrench and the pin came loose fairly easy. When I reinstalled the new pin I put anti-seize on the treads of both pins. Hopefully this will not happen again but I did save the wrench to reuse just in case it does. I appreciate the help from the people at this site. Its good to know that everyone is willing to share their knowledge freely.
