Monday I went in for back surgery and I got home yesterday morning. All went well I guess, at least the leg pain that I've had since Oct. is gone. I had a U.N. surgical team work on me- Chinese doctor and nurse, an Indian anathesiologist (sp?), a Russian intern, and an American nurse practioner. The doc told me that I can't lift anything heavier than 10# and not bending or twisting for at least 4 weeks. And we just got some snow ah well I guess the kids or the Mrs. will have to take care of that. I know I haven't posted or even visited here much in awhile but I've been working out of town. Now that I've got all the time in the world and nothing to do I should be coming here more often. I've pretty much missed last riding season and the great winter we've had so all I can do now is wait til spring.

Hey Jim glad to hear the knife went well. Take it nice and easy and let it heal up nicely so you can ride with us in the spring, or May, whichever is earlier around these parts.
Let me know if I can do anything for ya. I'm sure Mike, Ed and Matt will also be willing to assist another local if needed. Like how I volunteer them guys too?
Seriously, give me shout if you get bored out of your mind and we can stop in to visit to cheer you up. Or at least then you won't think life is so bad once you see us losers.

The pain being gone is a good indication, but not such a good incentive to not lift anything. As a member of the L5-S1 repair club, I can testify that it takes alot to get you to REMEMBER....Do NOT lift ANYTHING heavier than a gallon of milk. I'd even recommend not lifting anything more than a 12 oz. beer! Have a friend who I dispensed this advice to, which went unheeded. He had to go in for 2 more surgeries, and then pain management, then two more surgeries to install a electronic nerve stint, with a control implant. Believe me, there is nothing worse than that feeling when you realize you shouldn't have lifted that 15 lbs. of whatever! Wishing you a speedy recovery, and don't pick that up, that's what kids are good for!

Slightly OT. I recently talked to a good friend who rolled an ATV 2 1/2 years ago. Severely cracked some vertebrate, medical lay-off etc. He's back in school, retraining, things are looking up. Best of all he got a few hundred pain free miles in last summer. Granted it was on a Harley, but no sense going into that, it involves 2 wheels and a motor.

I'm sure his details don't compare with your details, but he listened to the doctors. If the 600# ATV had rolled over his head, he'd been just fine. First decent weather this year I'll be taking a spin for a visit and general harassment and support purposes.

All I can say is you can never lift heavy items again-ever! So get well and heed my advice.

Do what they say and heal up! My wife had an L5-S1 fusion a year ago so I know what you're dealing with.

On the not lifting part:
A friend of mine had kidney stones blasted and fished out last year. Afterwards the doc told him not to lift anything over five pounds for a week. Being a bit of a smartass, he says, "well how am I supposed to take a leak if I can't lift anything big?"
The doc didn't miss a beat. He replied,






"Just have your wife hold your belly out of the way"

hang in there jim... and do what the doc tells you and take your time getting back don't rush it..

Sorry to read that you had to have surgery, but as you know by now the results are fantastic. Leg pain gone... Ahh, what a relief! I had a rupture at L4/L5 8 yrs ago. For me, the pain was so bad that if the Dr had said the only way to get rid of the pain would be to amputate my leg, I would not have hesitated in saying "Do it now!". But we have some good Drs in Rochester. Once the incision heals and you get the staples out, recovery is very quick.
A bulge in L5/S1 this past summer got me again, but I was lucky enough to get past it with a lot of PT. By the time Spring rolls around, it will all be nothing more than an unpleasant a memory. Its hard to beleive a Dr when he says you will be as good as new again, but its really the truth. You are gonna be back on the bike and pain free in just a few more months. Thanks again guys & gals for all the responses it means alot. Last year I had the same problem with my back but it did eventually go away, this year it didn't. Believe me even if I wanted to lift anythig heavy (which I don't) the Mrs. wouldn't let me. She's too good to me. I've had to skip a couple of welding classes because of this, but the NP said I could start going again next week. I have 6 certs. now and am trying to get some more. There is also a 30 hour OSHA course that I'll end up taking now that I couldn't before because it was during the day and I didn't want to miss any time from work.

BTW- the furnace works great

I just checked in here and read your post. I,m in the same boat as you right now. Sitting around being bored. I went in last Friday and had C5/6, C6/7 discs repaired. Pretty painful weekend but starting to feel a lot better. I went through the L5/S1 surgery about 10 years ago and haven't had any problems since. Just don't lift anything heavy anymore, cause you don't want to go through that again. I'm hoping my neck heals as well as my lower back. At least it's winter and not missing much riding. Heal up and take it easy.

I live @ 20 miles south east of Rochester, just outside of Shortsville.

Both you guys take care and heal up. Somehow that's one surgery I've been able to avoid, but I have a brother, father, and mother who've all had back surgery.

When I was a kid I had a friend that lived in Shortsville. We should get together some time for a ride.
