On my Speedmaster there's an unused plug under the gas tank with black and purple wires leading to it. Does anyone know if this connects to the fuse box and if so where?
Is it possible or practical to snip this plug off and connect the leads to a standard automotive plug (like on the Battery Tender) to use for accessories?

If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's for the accessory socket. It can be used either to power accessories, or to connect a battery tender. Don't snip it, get the socket and plug it in. (Better still get an aftermarket one and pay heaps less for the same thing that the Triumph dealer wants. )

The auxiliary power socket supplied by Triumph has dedicated leads for this purpose.
They should be situated under the tank and are taped to the loom ready for easy installation of the socket which fits in the large dia hole through the top engine mount.
I wouldn't snip the plug off - I was going to say it might be for the rev counter accessory but obviously you already have that on the Speedy.
I'm not sure what it's for but I'd remove the tank and use that bit of wiring for the auxiliary plug you want to fit.

My source for such goodies is www.powerletproducts.com.They have a wide variety of sockets, plugs, adapters, extension cables, etc., are economical, and great folks. The blurb on their products page is a worthwhile read. They stock extensions up to 40", which is priced @ $10.95. I called for a custom 72" version & they did it for ten bucks even! The standard Triumph socket is "BMW" style. Adapters are available to other styles. Be aware that if you get their "military" style socket, the cap is olive drab color. I got one of those & painted it with gloss black Krylon fusion ordered in via the local do it best hardware. To patch to a charger, SAE style connector is good. These are standard connections on Battery Tender, Yuasa, and others.

It is definitely the power socket connector. The socket can be had from Triumph or Powerlet.

I gotta tell you, I don't see it on their site. The plug on my bike is square-ish, female I believe.

Should be this one, I think, the standard powerlet socket. Your harness plug should be "T" shaped, female.

Triumph dealers sell an outlet that the wires plug into. The outlet accepts Powerler, or BMW, plugs that go into the outlet. I use mine for a heated vest.

Whoa! You mean the back of the Powerlet socket plugs right into this plug on the bike? And it's fused at #3? Very cool!

Erwin, I already have a dedicated battery tender connector. I'll use this for something more nefarious.

The connector plug that is attached to the wiring harness is shaped like this |_ and the Powerlet socket has corresponding lugs that plug right in. I first mounted the Powerlet socket in the hole in the upper engine mount and then plugged in the connector. It took me longer to remove the seats and tank....

I don't want to sound redundant but when you say connector plugs right into the back of the powerlet socket, does that mean that the length of the wire w/ the connector actually reaches the back of the socket without the need to extend it? Sort of plug and play so to speak? Thanks.

Henry, you might have to re-route the plug, but not extend it, so the powerlet can plug into it. I was able to mount powerlet connector in the metal plate under the gas tank, right through the round hole. It's hard to describe but it really is simple once you see how it goes. Good luck!

Kevin,
I think I get the picture. Seems to me that the most common, short of being intended, is the round hole on the mid upper engine mount. I haven't seen the connector as I haven't taken the tank off but I'm assuming it is isn't any of the connectors found just by looking undersides of the tank. There's two that can be seen, 1) on the righthand aside, black rectangular with say about 10 female terminals and 2) on the lefthand side, just above the fuel switch of the petcock, it's back with the inside portion of the connector yellow. It doesn't appear to me that one of those was the one you were referring to, so I'll just take off the seat and tank when the parts arrive. I just wish someone has pictures they can post here of the actual install. Thanks again.
Henry

Henry, it's probably tucked in under the tank. There should be no reason to remove the tank or seat to get to it. Shine a good flashlight on the wire harness and you may see it were there is some blue tape around the harness.
I'll try to take a couple of pictures to show you.

It should be just on the other side of the engine mount. It should be a black connector with 2 wires, one black and the other purple. Here's pics of the front and back side. That's a Triumph OEM accessory plug. In the first pic you'll also notice my homemade carburetor support.

Sorry, didn't see Sal's post first!
FYI, in Sal's pic you will note the rectangular hole in the metal near the powerlet jack. This is a great place to install a switch. I used a lighted one which is easier to find in the dark and a good reminder to shut off.

I've been meaning to get one for years, so this thread is great! ....so even though the black/purple connector (fuse #3) is 10amps , we can still use the Powerlet 16amp rated socket? (i'm not electric savvy, so hope this is not a stupid question ) Mole

Not a stupid question. You can use the Powerlet socket, you just cannot exceed the 10 amp fuse is all.
