Nice one PL, Old british saying "I see you have a man What does!!!" Got him well trained! Mike
Honestly.......no training at all. It is just in him..........he loves clean. I joke with him and tell him he should have married Monica on Friends. She was a complete clean freak. Hubby would rival her. He cleans his bikes before and after each ride. Needless to say they are very sparklie. I wanted way less shine and chrome. I love the blacked out engines, black spokes/wheels and black pipes. More old school for me.........and less shining all the time. ~*~ Painted Lady

7 more days til MSF!!
Might be a good idea to start now working up a list of excuses to go out on the bike. It gets a bit awkward trying to think fast when met in the drive with "I thought you said you were going to do some gardening".

Hi Donna.Welcome to the club!! You will absolutely LOVE this bike!!In reference to starting the bike, under no circumstances touch the throttle when starting, as this could explode the air box.Turn on fuel, pull choke, press starter. That's it!!!Ride safe,Charlie.

Don't let those guys scare you. That makes it sound like something will explode if you don't squeeze the throttle just right. That just isn't normally the case. It's not good to twist the throttle too much, if at all, before you hit the starter. That could flood the motor and cause it to backfire when it does start.
These bikes backfire occasionally, just like any carbureted engine. They are capable of backfiring through the exhaust or through the carburetors. A few guys have found their airbox cracked or broken because of backfiring through the carbs, but I think it's a rare event. I have felt backfires under my seat (through the carbs), but I've never had any damage.
Why does it happen? It's hard to say. It could be improper tuning. I'm guessing it's caused by a rich fuel condition (possibly from a little flooding by twisting the throttle before hitting the starter). There is still gas burning in the cylinder when the intake valve opens. It ignites gas in the intake manifold and causes a backfire through the carburetors. Yes, it could be from twisting the throttle (a bunch) before hitting the starter.
For the first couple years that I had my bike, I gave the throttle a twist or two before hitting the starter. I've never had any problems. Recently I've tried not to do that, but I still do occasionally out of habit.
Think positive. When these bikes are running right, it's like the sweetest music you have ever heard.

No really, don't let them scare you.... but if you do feel the biggest almighty explosion under the seat.... you'll now know what it is!! If you follow what they say and don't touch the throttle it shouldn't happen. I think the reason mine exploded it that with my 125 and it's automatic choke, I was told to twist the throttle before (but not while) starting...and I may have just had a mental block that day...

I saw an article (included in a previous post) that said if you painted the inside of the pipes with a heat resistant paint the it would stop the blueing.
just found it....
Just saw this in the 'Top Biking Tips' in MCN.....
KEEP YOUR PIPES CLEAN
Next time you splash out on some expensive chrome downpipes, before you fit them sray a good quantity of PJ1 high temp exhaust paint inside the pipe where it fits to the cylinder head. This has the remarkable effect of stopping the pipes from blueing and discolouring and keeps them looking like new. Doesn't seem to work so well on the stainless pipes I just fitted to my Diversion 600, but works very well on big-bore pipes like Harley-Davidson and older British iron.
Stepen Dunne Hanslope
Anyone tried it ?
If you do it today you MIGHT regret it. If you CAN'T do it tomorrow you WILL regret it.

Hi Donna.Just for the record I wasn't trying to scare you about the air box thing.Just passing on some info I'd read on this forum. It may never have happened to you, however it has happened to others.By the way,Michael, I remember reading some years back in a steet rod mag that coating the inside of the pipes with white (lithium??) grease would prevent the blueing as well.Never tried it so I don't know firsthand.Anybody else ever heard of this?????Ride safe all,Charlie.

Donna, Does hubby got a name? He's in the family now, too, ya know. Maybe you've mentioned it and I missed it, but I really don't want to call him that when we meet. You're still smilin' aren't ya?

Donna, the reason for not rolling the throttle during startup is because of the ignition system on the bike. The igniter unit evaluates the signals received from the pick-up coil, which informs it of the engine speed and piston position. There is a throttle position sensor on the right had side of the carburettors, which informs the igniter of that position. From these signals, the igniter unit calculates the correct ignition timing and supplies the required charging voltage to the high tension coil. The parameters within the igniter are pre-progammed. Because of this if the thottle is not in the idle position (not moved) when starting, it can cause backfiring. I have found that in normal weather conditions, it is best to try starting by disengaging the clutch, and hitting the starter. If it does not start right away and during cold weather pull out the choke, disengaging the clutch, and hitting the starter. Sometimes when it is very cold out in the 20s or teens I have had to hit the starter a couple of times. Sometimes I will roll the throttle a couple of times before I hit the starter. It is best never to roll the throttle during starting.

My 1st MSF class was last night......we are in the class room again tonight and then on the range Sat. and Sun. The weather is just beautiful.......thank goodness. The class was good and really went into more detail about everything we have been reading in the MSF booklet.........watched dvd's. It is good so far. 6 women and one man......including the 2 men instructors in the class. Cheri and I are trying to behave and be serious. We really are. Its funny we are the only two in the class that have highlighted and wrote all the answers to the questions in our MSF booklets prior to class. No one else even read them. We even did the practice test on the MSF website. But putting it all together on the range.........well that is a different story. I feel good about it though. I am just slightly concerned with turning and obstacles. Cheri is concerned with getting the bike moving and handling the weight. I will let you all know how is goes. ~*~ Painted Lady

I really like your new bike as it is the spitting image of Big Poppy when I bought it in June of 06.
Do not worry about the MSC you will pass it no sweat. My wife Linda passed in Aug. in a downpour and she was never on a bike before in her life.

Just remember the rear brake only is your friend in low speed situations. Hopefully they teach you that in the MSF course. Practice figure 8's in an empty street, etc using the rear brake only to control your momemtum. You'll get the hang of it in no time.

OK,
Tell Rich he's a member here too so he might as well sign up. The more ya'll ride together, the more you'll see that look on his face. He'll end up with a Triumph too, once he comes to his senses. Now go open some tubes and paint us a portrait of your bike, then let us know her/his name. She looks like a Caroline to me, but if you want Cletus or Eugene, so be it.
Ride Safe,
Dennis
