I installed one of the Triumph power outlets a couple years ago. It uses powerlet, or BMW, plugs. I've never used it, but I got a heated vest last week. I plugged the vest into the outlet, and the sucker won't work! (I know the vest is okay, because I used it on the Trophy, which has a power cord from the battery). Has anyone else had problems with these plugs? There are two wires going into it -- one is black, the other is purple.

Did you check the socket with a volt meter? It should be point Pos. You may also want to check voltage at the plug, or fuse?

Fuse should be a 10 amp at #3 position in the box, using the guide pasted to the inside cover of fuse box cover. This outlet is basically like a cigarette lighter outlet, plug only goes on one way. It's about as plug'n'play as it gets. Check the vest, make sure you aren't missing a switch or a controller of some kind.

It was the fuse, alright. I pulled the #3 fuse, and it is very plainly ruined. I replaced it with a new one, and the vest seems to work fine now. I can't understand how the fuse was ruined. I installed the outlet about two years ago, and it has never been used. I have a couple spares in my saddlebag now! Thanks.

That's what I concluded -- I don't recall disconnecting the battery cables when I installed the outlet, so I probably screwed it up. I should consider myself lucky, I guess. The vest is a Widder, and it works great -- I opted to get just the plain, cheap on/off switch, rather than the thermostatic gizmo.

Trade you Penny tech info for some assitance. As we all know these Triumph/BMW plugs cost a fortune but can be purchased from your local John Deere dealership for a fraction of the cost. JD has been using this type of plug for years I have owned my Speedie for a whole 2 days now. I am use to riding my Vstrom with Heated vest, satellite radio and GPS all powered feom thw bike.
After reading this thread I went and looked for the spare wires. After sticking my hand up under the gas tank all I could find was an eight port adatoper. Could anybody post a picture of what and where I should be looking
Thanks in advance.

The connector should be located almost directly above the carbs in the main cable harness. My bike is a 2002 and the poweroutlet cable had blue tape on the wires just before the connector. Removing the tank will make finding it much easier.

Underneath the fuel tank is an unused connector - L-shaped on the end. There are two wires going to it - one black and one purple. Only about an inch of the wires was exposed on mine; the remainder was wrapped in electrical tape, but you can cut or remove some of the tape to expose more of the wires. There's not much slack, but it results in a nice, tight fit.

There's a link to a similar discussion HERE ON BA.COM . I just installed the Powerlet connector tonight. Instant access to 12 VDC!
