Seriously though, I would bet reliability and weight would be the main reasons over hydraulics, since this system just uses a "simple" system of bevel gears and splines to get the motion to the front axle. Plus, I would think a hydraulic hose under pressure for a drive unit (with a big enough hose to get proper flow) would make steering pretty heavy when the hoses go "rigid" under pressure.
Yep. You'd need a reservoir, pump, pump drive, cooler, drive motor, hoses, filters etc.
Besides, the front wheel speed would be dependent on fluid flow determined by pump speed or use of (heavy) variable speed pump and motor. PLUS a way to match speed with the rear wheel.
The fluid drives that have been developed are part time systems for short duration use.
