The stuff is good, takes the discoloration off of my son's Sceptres easily. but it is ten bucks for a little tube.

I found this comment in another thread. It leads me to believe that Scepters will start to blue. Is this true? If so, that would suck, I finally thought I had made a pipe desicion. FWIW... Epcos sounded a tad bit weak to me, I've been thinking Scepters would pick up the slack.

They dont blue. I have had them one for over 4500 miles. They have a faint gold in them, and that is normal for stainless steel. The still look great, and sound wonderful.

Aww man I was hoping they would stay nice and shiny. Could anything be done to prevent "golding"? Anyone know?

I was told by Tom at Epco that you can polish the golding out of SS. He said it might take several polishings over time but enventually, the golding would stop.
I have yet to try this as it does not bother me that much.

Well that just plain sux. Why would they make them so the chrome discolors? At $600 this should not happen. I mean for cryin' out loud (WHAAAA) the stock chrome pipes don't even do that. And we all know how cheap that chrome is. The Headers I can understand, but the pipes.?. Polishing opens them up to oxidization as well.
Are there any pipes comprable to Scepters that don't turn gold?

Not sure any others will not turn gold. I heard Epcos do it too. The Sceptres sound amazing though so it is worth it. I have them and love them.

I read this in the following article at http://www.xs11.com/faq/faqpipes.shtmlIt reads... The bluing may be prevented with a generous coating of high-temp on the INSIDE of the pipes prior to be being installed for the first time. If you don't paint it before you use the pipes - even once - don't bother. It needs to be done on "virgin" pipes only. Anyone ever heard of this?

They are STAINLESS STEEL, not chrome. SS is more expensive. You can polich it out, and it is a hell of a lot better than the rust one gets with chrome. The gold tint I have is VERY faint, and the pipes are VERY shiny. As for their sound, they are incredible. Call Team Triumph and talk with Todd, he makes them.

The gold isn't as hard to buff out as the blue on the headers. The gold comes out fairly easily.
Heat is what causes stainless steel to discolor. I think the best protection is to have your bike properly jetted. A lean condition will make it run hot, and a rich condition will blow unburned fuel into the exhaust, where you get a secondary burn inside the pipes. Both will cause discoloration. Proper jetting will give you the least discoloration, although it may not eliminate it altogether.
This is my opinion. All appropriate disclaimers apply.

Me thinks you are missing something. There is no chrome on the sceptres.
Let me phrase it another way, Sceptres are made out of Stainless Steel.
PS: The sceptres tend to do the eddy murphy movie character thing at the header pipe/slip-on junction. The gold rubs out very easy with simichrome and having way to many miles and years on mine I have only rubbed them out at most several times. You don't want to know what I paid for them either. I will say that Sceptre prices do not behave like electronics prices.

If you look closely at this picture, you can see some minor discoloration where the pipe meets the header pipe. My Scepters have been on my bike for 6k miles and the golding isn't really that bad. I polished it out once, using car paint polish I had in the cabinet, and haven't been bothered by it enough to do it again. I find it completely liveable. My only issue with the Scepters is I find them too loud, and once I can muster up the courage to spend another $100 for the baffles, I'll be buying them. Maybe this week...

my scepters have about 65000 miles on them and sound awesome. the slight discoloration will come off pretty easily when i actually decide to wash the bike. (doesn't happen very often) the rain usually does a good enough job. the absolute best improvement i did to my bike!

If pipes are not double walled, they will blue or color, depending on the material- i.e. stainless steel or chromed rolled mild. As for the coatings, some companies like Hooker for example(they make 'em for HD's and others but not ours) puts a ceramic coating on the inside of their pipes/headers and they don't color.

Thats what I was wondering. The article I refered to said something about spaying high temp paint on the insides. But only on brand new pipes. That prevents discoloring. I was wondering if anyone has tried or heard of that. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt anything, so I'll probably try it.
