Hi boys & Girls I have just spoken to DFDS re the ferry crossing from Harwich to Denmark... the best deal we can get is £297 per person!! & we have to book it pretty soon & pay in full I checked on line for myself, Jackie & Megan on 2 bikes & it came to a total of £570!!! (I don't want to buy the bloody boat, I only want to be a passenger ) That is too rich for me for a weekend & that is before fuel, beer & camping money The cheaper option is Dover to Dunkirk again & then a long 2 day ride there & a 2 day ride back but that then makes it a lot longer break. What do you all think???

They don't go from Newcastle to Sweden(Gothenberg 26 hr trip) anymore just Newcastle to Norway(Stavanger/Haugesund) and that would entail a day and a half or two day ride. I have been looking at the options as I am a possibly/maybe but the cost could be very prohibitive and there are not many spaces left on the return trip, Harwich Esjberg would appear to be the BEST option but I'm looking at possible longer break and come back through Denmark Germany Holland scenic steady/slow with tent. as return ferry is all booked up the cheap cabins through August as it would appear to be holiday time in Sweden.... their all coming over here!!! Between 750 -800 miles! Luke & I did it back from Nyborg just accross the bridge into Denmark to Dunkirk in 16 hours of riding on the Speedmaster (quicker than the slower Americas )
you need a min of 2 full days or 3 days for comfort, depending on the crossing time. You can cut a bit of mileage down by getting a short ferry from northern Germany to Denmark for about £20.00

I think we need to consider somewhere else! Sweden would have been great, but that is way too much for a (long) weekend!

I hate to say it....
But I agree with Nobby. Not that I hate to agree with Nobby, but that I think it may have to be somewhere else.
I've been racking my brains all day (the bits when I haven't been asleep...) and short of flying over and getting a couple of hire cars can't think/find any other way. And hiring cars...it's a bleedin' biker weekend.... the flights were £104 rtn Heathrow to Stockholm. But no.
Switzerland? Austria?? Austria's gorgeous... and both are easier for Bedouin to get to...

Hey you lot are getting me worried, ive all ready booked my Ticket . If anybodys interested the cheapest crossing for 1bike,1person with 4man cabin from Kiel to Gothenburg ist 107Quid return with "Stena line" Bit of a long slog for you lot,id say about 10-12hrsfrom Dunkirk-Kiel but the ferry is very nice and from Gothenberg-Jonkopping is only about a 100mile buzz. There are also cheaper, shorter Ferrys from Travemunde(about 50miles before Kiel)-the south of Sweden. What do you guys think? if its too much it too much.Im going now whatever.I just have to ride those Swedish roads this year Nick

Well all I can say is, that the Mrs will have to stay at home looking at those prices.
Can I suggest Blackpool or even Fleetwood

Ok,I'm not bothered how long it takes, I just wanna ride me bike, hopefully from the beginning of March I'll be haveing the rest of the year off. But whatever, I think Martyns 2nd option is the more feasable, and its gonna be cheaper, which is a word I like.

Sweden... Austria... Switzerland... Blackpool.. Anything will be fine for me, but we have to keep the ball running and get a place for the meet so that we can plan it. My suggestion is that we go to the place where most members will make it. Johann

I can't do the second suggestion. I only get a certain amount of leave from work and most of that is already taken up with going to Oz. That was planned long before I even got my America and is even more important now. It'll be my nephew's first birthday while I'm there. Also £300 is half of the cost of my flight over there... Or nearly all of a flight to the US to visit my aunt. Or a lot of parts to get the 03 back on road. I can do Friday to Monday - wherever - but that really is all. Unless in the roster change in June things really change a lot and the first week in August falls on a week off that happens as part of the roster. Or even a wekkend off... which is neither at the mo. It's not that I don't want to go to Sweden - I'd love too - but we have to be practical. Most of the Euro members are gonna have to cross water to get there. The majority of the most are looking at £300. Each. If their partners are going...twice that. That's before fuel, food, and anything else. Then also look back at the original thread on the Euro Rally. There are possibly a couple of Americans coming too. So they're gonna have all this plus flights and vehicle hire too. I'm not against the Euro - far from it - but we have to go somewhere that is practical for all the members. Both in terms of distance and cost. Now where's my tablets?

Funny we only paid £280 for our tickets to Canada, so £297 just to cross a little bit of water is a lot of money...
Time factor does not bother me, but would the Mrs, trying to get time off work at such a busy period...

OK folks, like Gooseman said, we need to make some decisions soon. Gooseman have you already booked the site in Sweden? 1.How many people can get extra time off to ride to Sweden via Dunkirk? .. you will be looking a taking a week off. (2 days travel, 2 days- the weekend & 2 days back to Dunkirk & one day spare for travel in the UK. 2.Austria will be at least a full days ride, more like 2 same for Switzerland & it is very expensive & not so biker friendly!!! 3. What about Denmark? I think it would be a good idea for as many as possible from the UK to meet up.. maybe at the Ace Cafe one Sunday to make some decisions. Me, I will go anywhere, any excuse to ride the beast Well that's my two pennies worth.. over to you P.S I will be 50 next year & I am planning a 50 day trip through Russia & Mongolia with my brother in law who will also be a 50 year old git as well We are going to do it for charity, most likely NABD.. so I might be tapping you all up for sponsorship! ( hope I haven't stepped over the line with this plug )

Meet up at the Ace.... just tell me a Sunday and I'll be there. Just not the 14th - I'm on a pet food run. Though Sat 13th is ok.
Denmark would be ok. Just how long to get there and how much for the ferry?

The same as going to Sweden via Dover,Dunkirk approx £36.00 return is what we paid last year.
I think it would be good if it is held in Sweden as we already have a venue & local contacts to organise everything We could make a longer trip with a stop off in Northern Germany/Denmark & then do the bridge or the ferry into Sweden .. but hey, I'm bias.. I love riding in Sweden

Yes, the cabins are prebooked and the campsite are notified of our meeting being held there.
There will be no cost if i have to cancel the cabins this early, but i rather have them filled up with Ba.com members than doing that

Hi EDP, here is a brief info on the proposed rally
To all interested (worldwide):
The Euro-Rally in Sweden next year will take place in Bankeryd Friday August 3rd to Sunday the 5th (or 6th if you want to stay another night). Put this in your calendars and/or tell your boss that you dont want to/can't work this weekend.
Have a look in the Rallies section at the threads on the event.

I am afraid i have to agree with Nobby, that will be alittle much for me, thinking of fuel, beer and food, I am afraid this year will be alittle tight for me, looks like i may be looking for somewhere to rent by the end of the month.

Seriously, if it's the long way I can not do it.
It's not that I don't want to. I have limited leave and most of it is taken up to go and visit my sis in Oz.
Being blunt, I get the feeling most of the others are in the same boat. If not over leave then over the expense of the ferry journey + fuel + other costs.
Please reconsider. Otherwise it'll be Martyn, the Swedes and Nick.

Nobby, Just sold a Triumph so Im just down to the speedmaster and the S3...as for Gedges I wouldnt touch them with a barg pole! Alfs in Worthing is worth the extra 20 mile ride anytime. As for Sweden i am quite keen, but as i work as a policeman getting a time off can be a pain.I will put a request in now! Does anyone know if there will be room in the cabins? Makes me wish I hadnt sold my panniers now.

Gina,
I am not sure where that came from.
Over and above Martyn, Piper, Gooseman and Nick, you seem to have omitted the following from your list:
Hedgehog
Andy
Steve
Adey
Hotdog from Germany PLUS his whole family.
Grzegorz (crossing to Sweden from near Gdansk in Poland)
Pawel and wife Beata (crossing to Sweden from near Gdansk in Poland)
A new member from Poland.
Stewe and wife from the very north of Sweden.
Celt from Canada
Litzerski from the USA
Myself and partner (riding up through the Balkans and Eastern Europe to eventually meet up with Grzegorz, Pawel and co. and cross over from near Gdansk).
That's already over 20 "confirmed" people to date (not including, of course, others who are still considering it).
Also, from across the pond, the possibility of:
Mlessard
Airguy
Wojo
BonnyUsa
As there is no obvious case of "force majeur" and a lot of people (including some who are coming from a heck of a long way away) have been planning Sweden (and in some cases cities within Sweden) I would consider the change of country disruptive, at best.
Also, on this thread, there was mention of "decisions" of venue (decisions by whom and on behalf of whom???) to be taken following a meet at the Ace Cafe in London. I am unsure I understand what that was all about.
I would therefore ask that you reconsider and see if you could "squeeze" in the 16 hours required for the longer and much cheaper way round (along with Hedgehog and Andy who have also reconfirmed on this thread).
I did the math and its only approx. 200 miles (shall we say 3 hours?) more than say, Innsbruck in Austria which you were quite willing to do.
Guys and Gals, for issues pertaining directly to the Swedish Rally, can we please use the correct thread and not the "ferry cost ex UK" thread.
I only stumbled on this thread earlier today by accident (I have no reason to be interested in ferry costs ex UK).

You are most welcome to Sweden in August guys! We'll do our best to prepare a pleasant stay for you and all other ba.com-members who want to attend. A little later in spring I'll put up a thread concerning t-shirts and patches. I got the advice from Adey that it's a good thing to do things like that well in advance. Johann is checking alternatives to camping and bunking (is that a word? ) and we'll soon start planning rides and other things to do.

Sorry I will have to take a rain cheque, as the mrs cannot get time off work, and also just moved house and on top of that we have the TT in the Isle of Man to attend...
I know it would help if I got a job
All I can say is, enjoy yourselves and look forward to meeting everyone on a future meet
