Wire the lightbar - I did it

Here is a little write up on how I did the lightbar from Brent and used the switch from SRS.

I wanted to use the OEM light bar wiring harness, but I am not smart enough to figure all the different wires out to do that. I failed miserably at that attempt.

I did succeed at a simple way to wire it without butchering my stock wire harness and using a toggle switch and relay. For those of us that are very “electrical challenged” I am posting how I went about it.

First I purchased a switch from our very own SRS and a relay from Radio Shack, Model# 275-226 as recommended by others on the site, and finally figured out how to wire it in correctly.

OK, what I did was run a wire directly from the battery, 12 gage wire with an inline small spade fuse, to the main input on the relay pin 30. Then hooked the main out power to the lights on the relay pin 87. Then I ran a small gage wire to the dash and soldered it to one of the wires from the switch from SRS (I did not use the white wire at all). I hooked this wire to the relay on pin 86. After finding an open low voltage wire under the dash, I soldered one of the wires that came with the lightbar with a male plug to the other side of the switch and plugged the male into the open hot wire (only hot with the key on). I then used a short wire, just long enough to reach the AI bolt hole under the tank (this is where I placed the relay) and hooked the ground wire to pin 85, cleaned the surface of the bolt hole and connected the ground. I used a 15amp fuse for the inline fuse holder, it would take up to a 30 amp but I think a 15 is adequate for the light bar. I crimped a connector on the battery end of the main power supply wire to hook directly to the battery. This take a little time, but I did not have to butcher my main wire harness at all and it works just great. The key is off, the light bar is off (for those like me that WILL forget to turn them off and end up with a dead battery.

I have a "stick drawing" of how I did it also, linked here Lightbar

I know I am not the best at writing these things or making drawings, so if you have any questions either post here or message me. If I have pins wrong or something else the "tech" folks around here see, please feel free to correct me.

Good job! That is basically how I wired my lights, except I had to connect the two lights. Also wired up my horns that way, except rather than using a switch on the dash, I just used the original horn leads to the relay. So I have two relays on my old AI mounts
