Over the years I've been given numerous fruit cakes. None of which I've ever eaten or has anyone in the house eaten. I've sliced them up at parties and put them out for everyones enjoyment. Occasionally someone will try a bite but I end up throwing 95% away. Now I'm sure someone likes these things because they make millions of them each Christmas. Does anyone on this site actually go out of their way to buy and eat one of these fruit bricks?

actually, there only a few of these in existence and they have to make the rounds. so people feel compelled to take only small bites if any G

I was given one anonymously 25 years ago, but try to limit myself to "normal" mainstream foods like lefse', oyster stew and pickled herring on saltine crackers. I heard somewhere that the aformentioned herring goes well with a glass of beer JH

Please send your dark fruit cakes (light fruitcake not accepted). The ones wrapped in cheese cloth and soaked in alcohol for 6 months will be eaten. All others will be sent to an extraction plant in northern Alberta, upgraded and piped back as heavy crude.

Reido113, I believe the recipe calls for throwing away the fruitcake after soaking, and drinking the Grand Marnier. I used a couple to repair the foundation of the barn last year.

If you let them take a set, they make for a right dandy wheel chock.

Love it. The best fruitcake I ever ate came in a C-Rat pack (predecessor to MREs - Meals Rejected by Ethiopians), in Hohenfels Germany, freezing my a$$ off on a field training exercise. Speaking of C's, I loved the beef patties, until one day, when I was feeding my dog, I mistakenly licked the spoon after opening a can of Alpo. Hmmm...same difference

I'm not the biggest fan of the fruit cake, but Gina hit on the secret - Its in the secret sauce. Wet that thing down with the spirits of your choice. It becomes quite bearable. A good fruit cake has to be moist. There's no better moisturizer that a few shoots of alchohol.

That sounds good, makes sense too. I've always used dark rum or cognac.

As Gina said, there are only a few. Please eat them and make them go away forever! They can be used to patch potholes when needed. They also make good bricks for throwing at noisy cats, or annoying armadillos. When thoroughly soaked in alcohol they may be used to supplement worn out Tiki Torches. In times of dire need, they may be used to plug the exhaust of annoying Harley Davidsons, thereby rendering them harmless and silent. On hot days, compress one and place it under your kickstand, it will keep your bike from falling over on soft asphalt. Never, never drop one on your foot unless you are wearing steel toed shoes.

I've heard the number recently, I think there are 573 fruitcakes in existence. I got one last year from an elderly neighbor. She's getting it back Monday.

Love em! But my family was very poor when I was growing up. We always had lot's of fruitcake around. I thought it was the food of the gods. Hmmm, so everyone was giving these to my old man and I thought he was buying them. Two favorite brands Claxton and Grandma's. Mike

I read somplace that fruit cake was invented in the U.K. Slices of it where given to poor carrolers on Chrtmass Eve.
Um not poor as in bad singing.

The best 'spirit' to soak the fruit cake in is Rum. My Greatgrandma made it that way. Soak it down with Rum, wrap in cheesecloth and let it set for 4-6 months. Delicious.
