We are looking for a K and N Filter for our 2004 Bonneville America. We keep hearing they are out there - but can't locate one. Any ideas?

Marlayne, right now, K&N only makes an oil Filter, KN191 I believe, but no air filters, at least one that will fit in our airbox. If you go the route of removing the airbox and going with the freak kit, then they use a different K&N filter, but don't know the number (no plans on doing the Freak right now). Unifilter makes a filter for our bikes though, and I think probably just as good as K&N.

As far as I know only Uni-filter is making a direct replacement for the stock air box. K & N's that most of us are using requires removable of the stock air box.

When using the K&N Freak kit - do you lose the chrome covers?

I believe there is a bracket setup which keeps the chrome covers and gives you a toolbox, from what I've heard. Yeah, Iike those covers too!

We went to Speedmaster.com and saw a picture and the chrome covers were gone so we were a little un-nerved. We like the covers!

So do you lose the chrome covers when you went to the K&N?

The freak system has brackets that provide attachment points for the faux chrome cleaner covers. Some people had to tweak, also called bend, the covers and/or freak bracket to align the cleaner cover tabs properly. I didn't. In either case I believe that problem's been corrected. K/N air filters then attach directly to the mouth of the carbs with a hose clamp.
Is "mouth" a proper mechanical term?

BTW the K/N's come with a right side and left side part number. If you go through Brent at newspeedmaster.com he'll fix you up with the stuff you need. Is "stuff" a proper mechanical term?

Hi Marlayne et al

Norman Hyde here in UK is doing a re-usable, washable "DNA" air filter that fits in the stock airbox. Part number is HBK 352 for the America/Speedmaster. It is an oiled fabric metal mesh construction very similar to a K&N air filter. Norman is selling this item for £36.00 (about $65). I am going to fit one to my SM this weekend - will go up 2 sizes on main jets to 114's. Norman Hyde has a web site www.normanhyde.co.uk. Have a look

Regards

Jan

M, I've got the UNI filter in my America. It just drops in like the stock filter. No modifications needed and the bike remains stock in appearance.

Any landing you can walk away from is a good one.

Sorry for the late reply, I'm using a Unifilter, and a gutted stock airbox. The accleration and sound are nice, but there is a slight pulsation I don't like (that I've heard comes from gutting the airbox), that I'm trying to find a way around. Not bad that I don't like riding the bike, but I am kind of a perfectionist, so it will bug me till I fix it!

Marlayne,
The Freak allows the use of your chrome filter covers over the K&N filters. After re-jetting the freak kit gave a good performance boost. I use 145 mains, 45 pilots and 1 needle shim with Triumph short offroads. Dynamometer testing indicated 64Bhp and 49Ftlbs of torque. From a distance it looks like a stock set up due to the chrome covers.

That's the first I've heard of this. Interesting. Thanks for the website. I'll do more research. Let me know what you think after you've made the switch. It's interesting - all the replies. Thanks so much. The more we learn - the better our ride!

Did you get any better performance? Just courious - we woould like to enhance the performance if we are going to the trouble of changing filters.

How long ago did you make the switch? Are you happy with it? Is the performance better than you thought or is it just what you were looking for? Was it worth the $$ you spent? Just courious.

Are you happy with it? ((Yes, IMO these bikes run absolutely fine in stock condition. Curiousity and long Winters however got the best of me))

Is the performance better than you thought or is it just what you were looking for? ((Performance wise I pretty much knew what to expect, based upon the experience of the people here. A bit more Zip that shouldn't affect motor longevity))

Was it worth the $$ you spent? ((Now, why did you have to ask that? In short, yes it's well worth it. On this board there are lots of combinations, from stock airbox modifications -drilling holes, removing snorkel pieces- to complete airbox removal, matched with rejetted carbs and freer flowing exhaust. I think these various increased air/fuel combinations gain in the neighborhood of 6-8 Horsepower. Airbox mods, different carb needles and using a "hole" saw to remove 2 rear baffles or so from the stock exhaust accomplishes about the same thing for much fewer dollars. I still toy with the idea of altering the sidecovers and running with the filters exposed as in older Triumphs, which is one reason I went the "freak" route.

..and as they say, Your experience and tastes may vary. Ride Safe.

Go to http://www.knfilters.com/search/appsearch.aspx and enter Part Number TB-9004. This is the new K&N OVAL(!) airfilter for your Bonnie.

Kind regards from a Dutchman in Spain

2002 BA: AI removed, airbox modified, Unifilter, offroad exhaust, 42/140 jets.

The TB-9004 doesn't work on the Americas or Speedmasters. It's made for the Thruxton. Go to this link and put in a request for K&N to make an air filter for our bikes:

K&N Request page

You can also check out an e-mail drive that I started here on the website at the following links:
