Hey you hillbilly types, can you guys tell me some info about the K'ville, Crossville, Sunbright area?
Jane and I are getting really tired of cold weather and may be looking to relocate a bit warmer. I always liked the area when I rode through it, and have done some research, but actual people I might know that have the same interests might be a better source of info.
Anyway, just thinking about it.

Ok, you're not really hillbillies either.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.

My wife and I moved here to Maryville (about 15 miles from Knoxville - just past the airport) three years ago from Philadelphia, and we love it. I always thought I wanted to retire to Florida, but you couldn't drag me there now. This is motorcycle heaven, believe me! I'm 23.3 miles from the beginning of the Dragon, and there are plenty of other challenging rides just a short distance away. The area is very biker-friendly, and you'll find dealers for almost any make you'd want (including Triumph, of course). In the three winters we've been here so far there has been a total of probably 12 inches of snow -- one moderate snowfall in Philadelphia. The Honda Hoot is here, and the beach-based Bike Week things are less than a day away. Barber Motorsports Park is about three hours away. What more could you ask for?

I've been trying to find a reason to move to the K'ville area for years. Thought I had a angle worked out two years ago but it didn't work out. Pat, If you can swing it... go for it. The area is drop dead gorgeous.

Thanks for the info guys. I am really interested in the real estate values (would like to live on the water), crime, school quality and economy now.
I have ridden around the area a few times and really loved it each time I was there.
I may have something in the wind as to employment in that area, but hey, I have never been without work long, lots o' skills ya know.

Hum. Real estate values. Very reasonable vis-a-vis the national average. (would like to live on the water) so you want to live on a lake? Crime. Ask nobby. (Knoxville 2004 crime level was worse than national average) School quality. ???
Economy: No state income tax (that is if you do not receive interest from bonds and notes and dividends from stock, then it is 6%). Extremely high sales tax on all goods (State tax - 6% on food and food ingredients; 7% on all other tangible personal property. Once city/county additions are added that works out to 8.5% to 9.75%). Low property tax rates. And if you can fathom it, an Unauthorized Substances Tax. Beer Tax. Still gets cold. Knoxville is in the plains west of the mountains. Wierd blue laws. TN is the mecca that NC once was. The Oak Ridge area positively glows.

Crime looks a lot worse on the national averages than it actually is. Some darn thieves around here, but that tends to be related to drugs. I would also add however that if you are concerned about crime, TN has very good concealed carry laws.

Property is still very reasonable. You can get a crappy commute if you are not carful thought. I would advise you to drive your route to work before you buy.

+1 on the Motorcycle heaven though. It is nice to have the park, the dragon and the Skyway all so close.

Thanks Moe for the information. If you call Knoxville a high crime area you must be living on Waltons Mountain, good night John-boy
Born in Knoxville 50 years ago and have lived here for the most part all my life.

Pat,
might I suggest Jefferson County 30 mins.east of Ktown and 30 mins. west of the Smokies. Mostly rural areas but a hop skip and jump to I-40.
Cherokee Lake and Douglas Lake. Both very beautiful areas. Short ride to Hot Springs, NC one of the latest must ride and rediscover areas in the region.
Mike

Welcome Pat,
Hope you & Jane can migrate to a warmer lattitude. I'm still riding every day, but Friday & Saturday nights I drove the Buick to work (15° & 17°). Back up to 58° today.
It would be good to take a day trip for a visit.
It'll also give us rednecks more opportunities to improve the cultural aspects of our lives with you around.
Oh No! What will Matt do? He'll be in mourning for months if Uncle Pat ain't around.
Anyway, come on down and let us learn you some proper English.

Ride Safe, Dennis Triumph, it's how I live and what I ride.

People from outside of East Tennessee. Do yourselfs a favor. Stay away.

The roads are overly congested, most of them are dead straight for miles after mile. The people here are rude and obnoxious. The weather stinks, always raining. Houses cost and arm, a leg and your first born, beer is warm and horrible, no decent restaurants. Nothing good to day about this area.

Move along now, nothing to see here, move along. Go to Califonia, lots of space there.

OK...so you guessed im lying. This area is beautifall. Im about 70 miles south of Knoxville. I can be deep in the mountains in less than an hour. Deels Gap and the Skyway is just up the road. I think this is a great place to live. Of course, i cannot comment on other parts of the US, But i cannot think of many things that would make me leave here.

Change is good! I have a hard time staying anyplace longer than five years. Montana was a stretch for me at 8 years. It is fun to explore and find new places and faces. Next, you'll be looking for 12 month riding weather, and Florida is only a little ways further south!
