Unfortunately, the stuff in a real helmet that 'makes you look like a moron' is what would hopefully keep your brain from bruising or your skull from cracking. That moron material provides a path for the impact energy to dissipate.
About the only thing those kevlar/carbon fiber helmets may do is keep your skull in one piece. Your brain would probably be mush though. They look cool but I believe I will continue to wear my moron helmets.
