More often than not, my TBA turns backwards when I turn it off. It turns back enough to engage the starter. Do I have the idle set up too high or is the problem more of a timing issue? I have a more or less stock setup 790 cc. (no big bore, cams, special carbs, etc.) with TOR's, some jetting, snorkles removed.

The idle should be set at 1000 + or - 50 rpm's. The timing is controlled by the ignition module and is not adjustable. Could be cheap or bad fuel maybe?

If you're referring to that sort of wheeze heard right after killing the motor, it's normal. Not sure what might cause this, unless the motor was coming up on a compression cycle.

Maybe you got an Aussie engine.

I get that "wheeze" now and then too. Sometimes, there's a "thump thump" from the pipes.

My bike makes noises too.
