I've noticed a slight surging at highway (65-80 mph) speeds especially at lower gas tank levels. This condition seems the same whether the valve is turned to on or reserve. The hidden filter is suspect as well as the petcock screens. I have the stock petcock and purchased a small disposable inline filter to put in before the hidden filter. On the advice of our resident technical guru from a past post, I'll clean and replace the hidden filter instead of throwing it away. If anyone has had this condition of minor surging (like a strong headwind gust when there isn't one), I'd appreciate your sharing the cure(s). I'm going to clean the screens and install the extra filter this morning anyway as it can't hurt and doesn't cost much. Thanks, Steve

It might be that your tank is not venting properly causing it to starve for gas.

if life gives you lemons keep them because hey, free lemons.

All of my speed related surging disappeared when I replaced my chain. As it wore (unevenly as usual) it caused the chain to alternately go tight and loose resulting in a surging that I thought was engine related. Until someone on this forum pointed out this possiblity I too suspected a fuel problem. I first noticed the problem at about 15,000 miles and only at certain speeds. When I finally gave up on getting a belt conversion kit delivered I had almost 21,000 miles on the chain and the bike practically hopped down the road.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Steve,
What you describe is also what I experienced when I removed my snorkle from the top of the airbox. When I cut the bottom part of the snorkle off and reinserted just the top snout part, it cured it.
Maybe this helps ya.

Thanks all. I pulled the tank to get to the hidden filter and found it and the two tank screens to be clean. The tank vent valve was clogged, not allowing the tank to vent (Kenny) properly. I washed it out with hot soapy water, blew it dry and sprayed some WD-40 in to help dry it and blew it out again. I installed a filter just after the petcock to help prefilter before the hidden one. Then I rode about 150 miles with a group of bikers (mostly Harleys, 1 Suzuki Cruiser, 1 Hayabusa and my BA) and didn't have any surging. I'll advise if the surging rears it's ugly head again. Thanks, Steve Oh Pat, how much did you cut off of your airbox snout??

I cut the entire bottom part off, left just the top and enough for a lip to grip it back on.
