Guys. I bought the Kuryakyn Gas Cap from Brents. Just tried to fit it on my '06 Speedy....Not even close fitting. Anyone got one on their '06 ? Has the gas tank thread changed on the '06 ? Am I doing something stupid ? Suggestions please ? I already ditched the packaging 'cos I just assumed it would fit so I probably can't return either ! Surely I'm just missing something here ?

can you post a photo of the tank with out cap. and post a photo of the kuryakyn parts. but as far as I know, it should fit. I will have to see yours to offer any insight.

Since the gas tanks are all interchangable, there should be no reason it does not fit. But then again, I think I was mistaken about something once before. But I could be wrong about that too.
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.

So, you're saying that the outer ring part of the Kuryakyn will not thread onto your tank? Mine fit perfectly on an '05 and there's been no mention of any tank change. Maybe Brent accidentally shipped the wrong Kuryakyn cap. The packaging on mine reads: Vented Flush Mount Gas Cap (Fits: Right hand thread - '83-later XL, FXR, DYNA, SOFTAIL, and ROADKING) #8309. They make different ones that fit other models.

One additional note. If you threw away your packaging, surely you kept the instructions. My instruction sheet also has the model (8309) at the top.

It's worth checking ! Yes I have the instructions - thanks for the tip. It's so frustrating I mean - I may not be able to install a big bore kit myself but surely I can thread a f*@$king gas cap on a tank !!!!!

Well I checked and it is indeed 8309 so (as we all knew of course) Brent definitely sent me the correct cap. I just had time to check the part number last night but haven’t tried to fit the cap again yet. Man this is really bugging me. Am I overlooking something obvious here ?

Did you remove the standard cap first? Seriously though, what's wrong? Is the thread on the new cap's collar too big, too small, or the wrong thread?

You are taking about the collar not fitting and not the cap correct? Collar goes in first, then the cap. Just checking.?.

Yes - I removed the stock cap first - ha, ha The cap is in the collar already. I've removed 2 of the little bolts and put the brass things in place. As I try to simply screw the collar into the thread on the tank I get a fraction of a turn, not even a quarter, and that's it ! Feels like the thread is just wrong. As soon as I felt the obvious resistance I went cautious - not only so I didn't bust the collar but more importantly, if I did crack the whole thing, I was worried about fragments dropping in the tank. Perhaps another nights sleep, a drink and a little grease might help.

??? Are you saying the collar MUST be installed with the cap OUT ???

Doesn't matter, but when you finish tightening with the brass nuts. Be sure the cap is in before replacing the small screws. It will keep you from possibly dropping one in the tank.

Twist harder...seriously, my '05 seemed a little hard to turn after the first bit.
I too thought I had a problem, but I grabbed my junk in one hand and twisted harder with the other...and then it started screwing in real easy.

Now that's got to be the best advice I've got all day. I will indeed grab my junk in one hand and twist harder ! Maybe I could use some duck tape or something just in case the thing shatters so I don't get bits in the tank.

As the console can be removed with the cap in place, why not remove the console so you can get a closer look at what's going on?

Same problem with my 06 Speedmaster. I tried everything, it would not thread into the tank. I put some pressure on the cap, it would not thread. Talked with Brent and he said I was the second person in two days that had the same problem. Brent was wondering if the tank on the 06 had changed somehow since he had sold so many of these Kuriakyn caps to speedie owners without any problems.
Sent mine back for credit today.

I guess that would mean that the stock cap itself has to have changed as well? Why would they do that?

Well, the saga continues....... Convinced by you guys (yes it's all your fault) that it HAS TO fit, I put some muscle into it last night and both of those little brass bolts sheer right off. Luckily they did not fall into the tank and I was still able to replace the tiny allen bolts but now the f*#@king thing is stuck on there fast, still not close to fitting and sticking up out of the tank. I'll get a strap wrench on it tonight and remove it but last night I needed to just walk away before I did any more damage. I am now convinced that it does not, will not fit and the '06 thread must have changed !

So just to let you know, I e-mailed Brent about this and as always his customer focus and excellent service come immediately to the forefront. Even though I have no packaging and no little brass tightening bolts, without hesitation he offered me full credit for the thing. Thanks Brent. However, I'm telling you guys...the thread on the '06 tank must have changed 'cos these things do not fit.

Just for giggles, is there anyone local that has swapped to the Kuryakyn cap that you can try their stock cap?

I have an 03 TBA and an 06 TBA in the garage right now...
Both caps are completly interchangeable. No problems.
(I highly doubt a speedie tank is different than a America tank)
The caps are identical.
It must be a Kuryakyn problem.

Kuryakyn makes that cap in different sizes to fit different Harley models. I wouldn't be surprised if they miss-package one every now and then. That senario probably makes the most sense.

Only took me about 10 minutes fitting to my '06, but the air is cleaner over here.

Jumping in this conversation a little late but.... I just picked up the kury cap from newspeedmaster for my '06 speedy and as I was installing it I had a problem getting it on. I thought..I cant be this stupid as to not be able to put on a *ing gas cap can I?! I almost turned it hard thinking maybe it was stuck and then I remembered "Grab your junk in one hand and and twist harder with the other !" so I found this thread and re read it. I was a little worried but I really like this ****** cap so I wanted to give it another go. I too had a problem about a quarter turn into it, wouldn't go.. when I took the cap off I could see that it was trying to take some (not a lot) of the black paint off from around the threads. So I put a clean rag just ontop of the opening to the gas, cleaned a little of the paint shavings off with a rag and repeated that a few times, each time gently (by hand not a screw driver) getting closer and closer to screwing the cap down. The paint that was shaving off was only the black and none of the primer so I just kept going. Hopefully no long term effects, In just a few minutes ... wouldn't you know it worked!!!! If I hadn't re read this thread I surely would have either sent the thing back or kept pushing it harder and the thing would have broke just like newjerseywelsh's. Thanks for the tech tips!!! Who knew screwing and grabing your junk could make you this nervous! Thanks!!
Black '06 Speedmaster, BUB of course.
