Single tower or Dual tower Nology coils?
What's the difference? Which should we use?

How about just buying them from Brent? I know from first hand knowledge that he's already done the legwork needed to insure perfect compatibility for these bikes.

I had the very same question, so I emailed Brent. Here's the email exchange.
I suggest one of the moderators put this in the tech vault.

Hey John,

Because the Speedmaster is a 270 firing bike, you'll need two single tower
coils. The 360 degree bikes use one coil.

Thanks for the interest!

Subject: Nology coil question

Hi to Brent and everyone,

I'm thinking about buying the Nology coils, and I see that you have two sets
available. I see a single tower coil and a dual tower. The version I want
would be for a 2003 Speedmaster. Visually, the single tower coil looks like
the original equipment, with two leads coming in and a single post for the
plug wire. Am I on the right track?

Could you explain the difference? Maybe I (or you) could put your reply in
the Tech Vault on bonnevilleamerica.com.

Thanks a bunch,
John Mohr

To further explain, the dual tower coil for the 360 motor fires both plugs simultaneously, so one coil can do the job for both plugs. Since the plugs in the 270 motor can't fire at the same time, they each need two separate single tower coils to fire them independently. Make sense?

Whne you order them, go with the "full meal deal" and get the Nology wires and NKG Iridium plugs too.

Soren is right @ least get the coils & wires..There is a diffence on a Dyno run The curve is very smoth compared to the stock stuff...However..the side gapped plugs do a very nice job...so you can get away with the stock...surely a lot cheaper..

Side gapped spark plugs means removing the side electrode enough to allow the spark to progress into the combustion chamber, rather than obstructing it's path. See the pictures and explanation at:

that's what a sidegapped plug is.
i might try that on my beezer.

i already have the iridium on my speedy.
what kind of numbers are the nology coils/wires getting?

If you are replacing old, OEM coils with new Nologys, I'm sure you would see a noticable power gain.

I was having trouble with my speedy after moving down here to Albuquerque. I installed only the Nology coils (no new wires or plugs) and got back most of the power, maybe 80% of what I had lost. (Butt Dyno) Futzing with the jets and installing hotter plugs will probably get me to 100%. Keep in mind I moved from 800ft. to 5000ft. I'm still dialing that in too.

I think the coils get weak over time, and if you have never changed them, it's worth going to the Nologys for that reason alone. My bike ran MUCH better after installing the Nology coils. If I am wrong and the coils don't weaken over time, then the Nologys are much superior over the originals.

Just my 2¢
Cody
