I quit smoking @ 4 yrs ago, a year after watching my father die of lung cancer. 2 packs a day for 25 years certainly hasnt improoved my chances for living to a ripe old age but one of my main reasons for quitting was that I dont want to put my kids through the pain of watching their father die an early death. But besides reducing my risk of dying of cancer by 50%, Ive saved enough money in 4 yrs to more than pay for my America. Pick a reason that matters to you, and pick a goal that you will attain with the money you save. YOU CAN DO IT. You just need to wake up one day, any day, and say "I will never smoke another cigarette..." Good Luck, and DO IT!!!

Quitters: Smile to yourself every time you see a smoker standing outside in the rain. That used to be YOU (and me).

The 22nd is 6 months. I can't believe I did that for 36 years. I pray to have the spine to stay off them. They are killers.

I still miss them though

Trying again this morning, not easy, especially when all your co-workers are offering you Marlboro lights......would keep smoking, but chest pain proving to be a motivator...wish me luck (again)....

Good luck and wishes of success for you!
I quit six years ago. Smoked a pack + a day for twenty years. Was getting bronchitus three times a year. Last smoke I had was when I was sick, it was like inhaling water. Now I have asthema and have to take daily medications. That's where being stuborn got me. I finaly realized quiting was the hardest yet the most simple thing. When you want one, just put it off untill later. I'm still procrastinating have one. For me though, I can't breathe if I smoke, so that makes it easy I guess.
Good luck.

One week and two days, stopped to get gas today and actual bought a pack, just as I went to light the thing up.

This voice goes off in my head, (left my tin foil anti alien helmet at home today).

If you smoke this cig. you just put yourself through a week of hell for nothing. Did not smoke that cig..

But that pack sitting in the front seat of my car is haunting me right now.

Why do they do that? Do they think they're being funny? They did that crap with me the first couple of days, now most of the smokers just stay away. Not that I've turned into some anti-smoking nazi, its just easier if I'm not around it.

Almost everybody really wishes they weren't hooked on the darn things. Those that can't stop frequently sabotage those that try. Same thing with drinking and diets. It's the "hate the rich" philosophy. If I can't do it/have it - then nobody should!

Yeah it seems to run rampant umong smokers...except those who have actually tried to quit...they seem to have a certain amount of respect for the effort required...hang in there it does get easier...but just be prepared to deal with the occasional urge for one...the become fewer and further between...and less potent (so easier to deal with) but I could still go for one today (but I wont)

We watched my Father die of emphysema for a long slow 10 years. Emphysema is unfortunately a progressive disease, even if the stricken no longer smokes. The people you see walking around with 02 bottles are the newbs. If they are unlucky and live a while, the road ahead is mighty rocky for them. Science unfortunately now keeps those with emphysema alive for a long time. Near the end, my Father didn't have enough lung power (or ability to expel C02) to lift a plastic disposable razor to shave his face. A nurse had to come in and shave and bath and dress him. (We're not talking about a pretty & pleasant nurse either ;-/ we're talking about a Medicare provided special with the personality of a bench grinder.) He also had bladder cancer, another smoking related illness, that required numerous catheter procedures. Ouch.

Our Mother is now in a rest home dying of end stage emphysema. She is tied to a catheter, as she doesn't have the wind to walk to the bathroom. She also has osteoporosis (caused by smoking) so bad that her back bones spontaneously fracture. The best news is, she's only been suffering a few years, and has perhaps only a few weeks to go, as she begs for death to take her. On a lighter note, the other day she said "I wish Dad would come take me to Heaven with him, [pause] -----------------
but he's probably enjoying the quiet."
She gets Morphine on demand as she goes into panic attacks when she feels like she's drowning from the emphysema.

I'm not posting the above to seek sympathy, as having had three brushes with death, (Cancer & 2 heart attacks) I accept death as a part of life and do not fear it. I only post to demonstrate the end is mighty bleak if we can't kick habit. I also understand the depth of the insanity of addiction. I recall many instances like setting up my parent's oxygen tanks, and being anxious to finish the job so I could go outside and smoke.

3 months, 1 week, 15, hours, 19 Min...3,985 cigs not smoked, $797.00 saved (not really just not spent on cigs ) 2 weeks added to my life....unfortunatly there not two weeks in my 20's

For all of you still trying..keep it up...it does get easier...now the way I view it...

I would love a smoke...I just choose not to (and it's a much easier choice after 3 months)

will I want one tommorow...probably but I also probably won't have one...someday I might but today aint the day...and tommorow aint looking good either...

Advice from a 2 1/2 pack a day man. Quit smoking and buy a Triumph America as I did with the money saved from not smoking any longer..... I only smoked for approximately 52 years and quit cold turkey...

Rob,
That's a great job!!

Now the whole 2 weeks added to your life thing. How does that work if I've never smoked? If you get 2 weeks added for every 13 weeks smoke free then I've been alive 2400 weeks and never smoked. Should I get an extra 370 weeks or so to my life. That's about 7 years.

Actually thats about right they say smokers have about 10 years shorter life (with far more medical complications) than non smokers....and at some time (years after quiting) your health risks break down to the same as if you never smoked...but thats like 10 of 15 years after you quit...if I remember...all I know is today I'm not smoking....tommorow...well I'll cross that bridge....

Rob- I love the count, especially the "3,985 cigs not smoked". I stopped on 11/10, which was right around when you did.....To think that I haven't stood outside in the cold or out in the garage about 4,000 times, hurting myself.

I vacillate between being thrilled to not smoke " a day at a time" and being envious of folks I see smoking...Isn't that nutty? Crazy addiction.....I wouldn't envy someone who was choking herself to death 4,000 times every three months.

My best to all of us, trying and doing!
Paula

Paula,

November 12th here...so you are just about the same....I was a 1-1/2 thru 2-1/2 pack a day smoker so I rounded to two...the program I use to track this is www.silkquit.org/meter.html you can download it for free or download it and make a donation (the free one is in smaller print under the "donate" one) it works well (and is worth the donation...)
