Congrats on the 3 weeks Rob! I'm thinking of quitting smoking in order to fund getting another bike. $200/month will be a nice bike payment.

Oh GEEZ. They were 35 cents in the machine just inside the door at the bar down the street when I was too young to buy them legally .

55 cents in the store when I quit.

Well Done Mark...keep going...just remember to tell your self...today I'm not going to smoke....tommorrow will take care of itself....once youve worn the patch long enough to break the "smoking" habit then you can begin to ween yourself from the Nicotine...one thing at a time!

Keep at it Great job!

Great job...keep it up...I have found the cravings less frequent but a little more noticable...but I'm also off all NRT so that helps...

1 month and a day...1,200 cigs not smoked...over 1 bike payment saved...

Good luck to you on quitting. I watched my dad, and now my stepfather die from smoking related illnesses. I smoked for a few years and gave it up when my first daughter was born (she's 32 now!). It isn't easy, but it will be worth it to you when you do it.

I had my last smoke walking in the door to the hospital 12/11 for my 3rd cardiac catheter. Talk about hard core addicted. Mornings are tough, but the patches are a blessing. It's just a matter of time now.

As one is wide awake and watching the doctors and the monitors as the procedure happens, (not to mention floating on a cloud of fresh and juicy Fentanyl) I mentioned in good spirits to the doc who was pushing the wire, "If you don't quit smoking after the third cardiac procedure, maybe the doctor should save everyone the trouble and just mercy kill the patient." He replied, "Hippocratic oath aside, I'd leave off the 'mercy' part."

Stress got me last night, my single daughter (22 y/o with 2 kids and one on the way) had yet another drama crisis....had her electricity turned off due to lack of payment, was getting stress from both ends in massive doses, snatched cigarettes from her and lit one up....regretting it this morning though. My wife and I quit a year and a half ago. She still hates me for it and complains everyday that she wants a cigarette. I smoked almost 2 packs a day and I bought all the cigs for the week. I’m saving $200 + a month. It goes into my TIAA Cref retirement fund.

Health wasn't a motivation for me at all. I’m lucky to be alive as it is. I just hated being tied and tethered to the damn things, always checking if I had enough to smoke with me, where I was going to be able to smoke. I teach, so about an hour into class I started getting withdrawals, so at the 1hour 15-minute break I would quickly smoke 2 grits.

I used the nic gum for a couple days then went cold turkey. It was tough but not as tough as quitting drinking. I want a Absolut and tonic more than a cig-- but that's another post...

I did gain weight, though. I’m diabetic, so now I’m probably killing myself with sugar, which is another way I quit the oral end of it. I can go through a bag of mini snickers like a pack of cigs.

Once you quit, think about how awful it would be to go through it again. That helped me.

I decided to quit and had my last ciggy last night, I woke this morning and fixed a patch to my right arm.

I have been a heavy smoker for 32 years, smoking 50gram of Golden Virginia every two days. But like Cat says I started to put ciggs first and they were definately ruling my life. I will not see much benefit from it as I used to buy all my bacca in bulk from abroad.

wish me luck

I feel for everyone here.

I wish you the best of luck Ray. Actually it takes a great deal of will power. I am glad that you have decided for yourself. No one else and that's the key to quitting. As you know I smoke as well. Originally I began when I was 12, asking for money from my mother. Smoked about 1/2 pack a day. I quite a couple of years into my marriage at 25 with the help from my wife and also visualizing my uncle dying from lung cancer after smoking Drum roll your owns for 50 years [big breath]. Now being almost 45 I have restarted for a couple of years. A pack a week of those Captain Black cigars.

Keep yourself busy, chew lots of gum and save the money you would spend on smokes on your wife or your bike.

Good luck Ray.

I know you will get there, I know how hard you are gonna find it, but it will be worth it in the end.

And on rides were not gonna have to stop every half hour for you to have a roll up...

So, it took me cpr in the medic wagon, dying in the ER getting more cpr and dying in the cath lab getting the paddle treatment then getting 5 stents to think on quitting.

I am 4 months quit and still miss them a bit.

I am very proud of all of you that try, if you slip quit again and again until you get it. They are killers, cast them out. Good luck to all of us, we need it.

Off to smoke another pep-o-mint life saver.
