Well, if we are 'fessing up to visiting Phoenix, I've been there too.
About 15 years ago, I was at a 4 day conference at
Pointe South Mountain Resort put on by HP. Had a great time and even got in ride (horseback) through
South Mountain Park.
The things I remember the most:
Grass - The resort bordered a golf course. The ONLY place where the grass was green was inside the perimeter of the sprinklers. Very nice round circles of green grass!!

Weather - It was HOT! All the time! Hotter than Florida! Kept hearing 'but it's a dry heat'. Yeah right, it's still TOO hot!!!

Also, not a cloud in the sky. Ever. I was glad to get home and see some clouds!!!
Desert - What struck me the most was people's yard landscaping. Lot's of cacti, rocks, and sand adorned front yards. Everywhere was as dry as dry could be. When we were on the horseback ride, the guide would point out flowering cacti and we were all appreciative. He then told us that this was the 'wet season'!! HUH???
Had a great time. Would love to ride a bike through some of those areas.
