The conventional wisdom is that after the usually extensive police rider training, the motormen are among the most skilled street and highway riders. I have to wonder if an oil slick was involved.

A lot of the roads on Oahu are made with a subtance that contains crushed coral...makes them a little slicker when wet but still......

Yeah I don't get how they were "seriously injured" with no other vehicle involved and at slow speed.. I know even a slow fall can break bones if you're unlucky, but "seriously injured" in newspaperspeak over here means maimed, loss of limb etc, not a few banged up ribs..

That's really strange with all the training the average bike cop gets. Especially considering that it rains a lot there, so the streets should have been clean and the riders used to it. Because all the politicians were in the other lane, it might be that someone had their window open and some of th BS spilled out in front of the bikes.

I was under the impression that because they were part of the motorcade, they were traveling faster then normal. Just something I heard on the news. You know hear say.

I heard on the news this morning that one guy died from internal injuries. Why aren't there more details? What the heck happened?

Gina, Thanks for the link, but it doesn't really say what happened.

Looking at the picture with the dug up turf on the curb looks like he was in the bend of the rode the article states, hit the curb, dug up turf and high sided and hit the light poll in the medium. Back in the days of President George the First, I was in the Navy at the Washington Navy Yard in DC. I was in four presedential motorcades from the White House to Camp David, Maryland. Gulf War I was on and the President was advised not to fly on Marine one because of shoulder heald rocket threats. Let me tell you, we would not travel at posted speed limits. The motorcycle cops were leap frogging the motorcade passsing and the other cops in a constant motion. We would drive at 80 plus with no greater than two car lengths between each car in the motorcade. Funnest driving I ever did.My best wishes and prayers to the officers family Mark

The Honolulu Police Department mourns the loss of Officer Steve Favela, who died on November 26 from injuries he received five days earlier while escorting the motorcade of President George W. Bush. Officer Favela, a solo bike (motorcycle) officer, and two other officers with the President's motorcade, were involved in a collision on Hickam Air Force Base...

Favela suffered a broken pelvis, a severed artery in his right leg and multiple internal injuries, the Star Bulletin said. There had been some hope Friday that he would recover, when his condition improved slightly...
from the Political Gateway
"About 7:10 a.m., three solo bike officers were leading a motorcade on O'Malley Boulevard, about one-tenth of a mile east of Apollo Avenue.
The first officer was believed to have traveled through a slick spot on the roadway when he lost control of his motorcycle at a slight bend in the roadway, Fujii said. He struck a curb and fell.
Two other bike officers, who attempted to avoid striking the first officer, also lost control of their motorcycles and fell...
...Fujii said a pole and tree were hit but it is not known whether it was the solo bike officers or their motorcycles that struck the fixed objects..."
