I just got an 05 Speedmaster! Is there any real reason to turn off the gas when you're not riding it? I've had other bikes and never did but this is my first Triumph.

Not really, but it doesn't hurt. And if you do, dont forget to turn it back on (you'll discover why in about a 1/2 mile)

That's what I figured but one of my friends had a Harley and claimed gas would leak into his cylinders if he didn't cut it off.
Thanks for the info.

The older Triumphs you needed to turn the gas off when you were parking the bike. The new ones you don’t have too. When I first picked up my bike, out of habit, I used to turn off the gas after every use when I parked her for the evening. Over the last 2 years I don’t bother anymore. Doesn’t hurt it…

Appreciate it! I have only had time to ride about 25 miles and I can tell that I'm going to like this a whole lot better that the Valkyrie I just sold. Feels like a real bike.........now if i can just get used to the forward controls.......

So long as the floats are set correctly, and needle and seats are not seeping you are fine. The problem comes when they seep. Fuel drips into the combustion chamber and from there past the rings into your oil. It can wash down your cylinder walls too. Japanese bikes have a vacuum operated gas tap that actually shuts the gas off when it isn't running. I tend to error on the side of caution, and turn mine off....... just in case.

No doubt someone will jump in and explain about the exploding air box before it's all over with........ I'm not sure leaving the gas on has anything to do with that, but there are those who do.

I agree with erring on the side of caution. I've always shut off the fuel and by habit, still do.

Ronnie,
Let me be the first to say "Welcome". I think its good practice to get into the habit of turning off the gas- like said earlier- just remember to turn it back on.

I kick myself about weekly when I forget to turn the dang gas back on, but at least I've developed the habit of turning it off every time I get off the bike. I just think it's a good habit to stay with.

I found the little arrow on the gas tap handle thingie hard to see so I used a paint marker to blacken the end that the arrow points to. That way I have no confusion about whether or not I am on the main tank or reserve.

I shut mine off when not in use. I didnt in the beginning and it got a little stiff, harder to turn. So I started useing it more and now it works fine.

I painted the low background around the petcock arrow with black paint so I can see the silver arrow's direction.

I only turn the gas off over the winter, and run the bike dry.

Welcome aboard!

Turn mine off every time, and I have the Pingle, too. Habit. Sure can't hurt anything turning it off.

If left on, and a float stuck, carb bowls filled, overflowed, could be catastrophic, depending on location. BOOM!
