'Scuse my ignorance, but I see lots of references to "cages" and "cagers" on this site.
What are you talking about?
I live in the upside down part of the planet.

Speaking of which, when I was down there some time ago I saw globes and maps where the South was at the top rather than the North as we tend to do here. Are those commonly available at a reasonable price? The ones I bought were given away to young relatives
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

What is a Cager
Answer...IT IS US.
It is what we are when we are taking the family out, or going to do the groceries, to work, taking the children to school or all the other things that require a bigger vehicle than our bikes.
There are only a hand full of people on this site who do not own a car. The rest of us....CAGERS

Well there are Cagers and then there's CAGERS. I don't talk on a cell phone while driving a car. I don't cross 2 or 3 lanes of the freeway to jump on the offramp. I don't tailgate a motorcyclist in the rain or when it's dry. I don't change lanes, make turns, without using my turn signal.
I'd like to think that the rest of us in here treat motorcyclists with a little more respect than the average cager when we're out driving in our own 4 wheeled vehicles, because we know about the inherent dangers of riding a bike.

And that handful must be very very small. I know one guy who rides only a bike...does not own a car......He is a member of the International Order of Old Bastages M/C but he lives and works here in Tucson , Az so other than having to deal with rain storms in monsoon season and the relatively few times it perspires other than monsoon and the minor (by comparison) cold we see here from Nov to late February he gets by fine. He lives and breathes bikes and being a member of that club is a major part of his life.
Now, I am sure if he lived in a colder clime he would have to break down and buy himself an old junker cage for a backup means of transport.
His type are few and far between even within the so called 1% outlaw clubs. Most of the 1%ers own and drive cars as well.

Yes, some of us with families are forced to be cagers. Not sure what's the problem with the rest of you. Who says you need a car to take the kids to school, or get groceries, or go to work. Between my saddles and sissy bag I can carry 8-10 bags. Needing more just means multiple trips which = more riding time. The kids can be taken to school on the bike. More than one child again = more riding time. I guess the family part may be a problem but I have two kids and a wife. If she would ride we can each carry one child when going out. I spent the better part of the summer out of state doing contract work. Staying out of state 1-3 weeks at a time. Never took the cage.

Hardy souls are they if and when the roads are impassable due to snow or ice. Get much of that in the UK in winter?
I suppose municipal transportation/ buses subways are available.

I did try and get a car licence when I was even younger than I am now... but it seems it wasn't meant to be. And I'm happy not driving. Driving my family up the wall....that's a different matter

I think that somewhere along the line someone mis-spelled c-o-d-g-e-r, as in,,,,"that old codger doesn't belong on the road". And away it went.............straight into cages and cagers and what not. As usual, I'm probably wrong but here in Pennsylvania, never heard of the word cages unless you wanted a holding pen for your tomcat for the ride to the vets.

Cager is the common name of the species Doofus Automotivus Oblivious . Common characteristics are, short attention span, poor judgement, and lack of a clue. They wrap themselves in metal boxes or cages which leads to a false sense of security & invulnerability. Cagers have been known to prey on bikers ( Moto Insanus Rapidi ) pedestrians ( Shank's Mare Perambulus ) and even other cagers. Cagers are rendered less harmful with liberal applications of vigilance, foresight, and talent.

What we need is for the pipedr to elaborate on the subject. I am surprised that he hasn't been here yet. Barry, we need your words of wisdom here. The soapbox is all yours.

It's not just codgers that make up cagers. A soccer mom in a mini-van with a cell phone, a Starbucks and some kids bouncing around in the back seat is a real defination of a cage on wheels-with good reason.
They scare me worse than any codger-the old folks move slow enough to avoid. The soccer moms are all over the road.
