So this is a question for you guys who keep their bike in an outside or semi-outside situation (carport, etc). At my new place, I do have a roof over it, but nothing secure like a true garage, so I want to tie it to a post. I know nothing is perfect, but then again anyone with a garage door opener and some time could get mine now... So what do you guys use? Any suggestions? Or should I just get some chain and a padlock...

Ben,
The "best" I have seen is a 1x2 foot hole dug into the ground (under your car port) with a chunk of 1/2" stainless steel rod (bent into a "U" shape with legs) sunk into the hole and filled with two/three bags of "quickcreet fast setting) then a solid hunk of chain with a VG lock...takes about 2 hours to do and the most expensive part is the lock

There was once a TV public service show bout protecting your stuff from theft. While discussing the virtues of cable locks, the speaker cut through a cable lock one strand at a time with a pair of fingernail clippers. A big heavy duty chain wrapped through the frame and both wheels and locked to something that would require a jackhammer to remove.
A piece of 1 inch hardened tool steel with crossbars welded to the bottom, a lock loop bent into the top and welded shut, and the whole thing sunk in concrete will inconvenience a thief enough that he will probably go look for something easier to steal.

Oh ok Was thinkin it might be a brand name. I'll see what's out there. There is a 6' fence around the yard, but not lockable. I know if someone wants it, they'll get it... Just trying to detour the punks.

Pretty much any kind of chain, cable, etc is just to deter lazy thieves. A battery grinder with a cutting wheel on it will take care of anything metal in just a few seconds. Couple a good cable lock with a screaming loud alarm and you stand a chance of scaring them off or better yet catching them in the act. Just wait until they are a few steps down the road before you uncork the bird shot so you don't hit your bike.

We have a road course here..... Heartland Park Topeka. Once when the super bikes were racing some "pros" showed up with a box truck that had a roll out I beam in the top of it. They backed up to a row of bikes in the parking lot and filled the truck in just a matter of seconds. Got away clean.

Yeah hook a brother up It's a decent neighborhood, behind a fence, out of sight out of mind sort of thing. People leave their grills out, that sort of thing. I'm not super worried, but you never know...

Kryptonite Stronghold (above ground) item #330202. It uses three 5/8 inch diameter steel concrete anchor bolts beneath a cover secured by the padlock. It is a very good design. I paid $60 about 4 years ago for it. The "Kryptonite New York Fagettaboutit" lock and chain (was $90) secure the bike to the stronghold. Very secure. Don't get a cheaper lock (some can be foiled quickly by a cold gas "freeze" spray and a sharp strike with a hammer).

at work i back it up to the curb. i slip a kryptonite cable through rear frame and a rotor lock on the front wheel. i am living testimony that a kryptonite cable can not be cut. i went into the hardware store and borowed the cable or chain cutter. didn't phase it. all that saved me was i found the key!! joe

Hey Benny I just did a quick Google search and came up with this. I don't know the product but it looks pretty sturdy!! Obviously you then rely on the quality of the chain used. They do international shipping too.

Benny, years ago when I had my '71 Trophy, when I was stationed at Ft. Benning, Ga. I got a big heavy duty chain and the biggest baddest Master lock I could find( you know the one that can take a 44 magnum round). Never had a problem. I had it wrapped around the frame and took it with me everywhere. As you know, Bonnie has lived most of her adult life outside in my old apatment complex parking lot until about 4 weeks ago. I was very lucky because I just covered her and made sure she was parked under a light near my door. At least 2 bikes were stolen there in the years I lived there. I saw a disc lock in the one of the cycle magazines with an alarm on it that I wanted to try but never seem to have the money. I think a disc lock/alarm, plus the chain would definitely do the trick if you lived in a high access area.

Thanks to all. Working on some inconspicuous (sp?) shelter for it now. I think that'll do most of the work.
