I should have guessed you lot would be curious. The Ashes are the ultimate prize in Australian and English cricket. It is a tiny little bottle in which the ashes of some of the original equipment were placed. The Ashes is the Big one. It doesn't matter how many world championships we won against half the globe. Those three games, of 5 days each are the ones we wait for. Even if you don't like cricket. You still don't want the Poms(Property Of her Majesty) to win. Of course the Ashes don't leave England because they are too fragile. So they say. But they did win last year and thus have the bragging rights. The series doesn't quite stop the nation. (not like the Melbourne Cup last Tuesday(another story) but everyone knows what's going on.At least these days the Poms have been making a game of it.
Don't ask to explain how it takes 5 days to play one game.
