If it grinds when he tries to shift it's not disengaging.
Check the rod that runs through the tranny.
They were notorius for developing a flex.
I believe that there is also a small ball bearing
on the clutch side that has been known to "warp"
into some unknown dimension.
Cable stretch was also a common problem
easily checked.
