I rarely have passenger, but extended the Triumph OEM backrest 10" with an aluminum plate for the reason you mention. Appearance, in the eye of the beholder, might have had something to do with it also 
BTW; I ordered a tall, a low was shipped, so retrofitting was in order. The std tall one wasn't quite high enough anyway.
