Just curious how heated grips are installed on our bikes? Do they go between the grip and the handle bar, or do they go inside the handle bar?

I have the Kuryakyn ISO grips, and the thought of having to removed the left grip to install the heated portions doesn't sound very appealing (I'm pretty sure I would destroy the rubber part in the process). I'm also wondering how well the heat elements would work with the ISO grips.

Lastly, any recommendations on which brand of heated grips to look at?

Aerostich has these heated grip wraps .

Don't know if they're any good (I have heated gloves)...but they can be installed/removed at your leisure.

You could probably Google for some reviews.

I just bought a pair of those exact Aerostitch wraps, and I'm going to try to get them on this weekend. I'll post up and tell you how it goes! It looks pretty easy -- bolts straight to the battery.

Those look similar to the Oxford Hot Hands I read about shortly after I made this post. Sound like either of those might be the easiest way to add heated grips for the cold months.

I considered a set of those wraps myself once. I think they are the best solution. I have heard of heated grips, and heated INSERTS for grips that, like you said, would go around the bar, under the grip itself.

I suppose you could build you own??

I used the heated grip wraps from Aerostitch last winter, and they worked well for a NC winter. Actually, I just put them on this weekend again. Without the grip wraps, my fingers were uncomfortable riding in temp's in the 30's. With my regular gloves and the wraps, my hands and fingers were ok down into about the mid-20's. That was commuting to work, so I hardly ever got over about 45 mph. Only thing (and this was pretty minor) was some "hot spots" on the palms on longer rides. Moving my hands around, or switching the grip wraps on and off periodically cured that. They're simple to hook up too. I'd recommend them, but for longer, high-speed rides in cold weather, I'd probably spring for some heated gloves.

Just picked up a set of Gerbings heated gloves to go with my WarmNSafe heated jacket... not sure if Warmnsafe has their own gloves yet, and I was just passig this bike shop....<BG>

The gloves plug directly into (I hope, since Gerber stole warm nsafe ideas) the plugs at the ends of the sleeves in the jacket liner....

Nice people... I met them last April when I rode the Harley from San Diego to Ohio... it was still cold out..Jacket liner worked great.

With Gerbing, I use a separate circuit for the gloves and jacket. It seems the pant liners and gloves need the most power, and the socks and jacket the least. If the socks are connected to the pant liners, to get the pants warm, the socks are really cooking (they work too well). To keep the gloves warm, same thing happens with the jacket liner, it cooks!

The WarmNSafe web site is interesting. Generally I can dress warm enough for the ride but my hands still get cold.

The HippoHands really seem to be a big help in this regard because they keep that cold wind off your knuckles. I'm look forward to testing them in some really cold temperatures soon.

Bottom line for me is that if it's cold enough for ice or frost on the roads it's too cold to ride.

REPORT: The Aerostitch grip wraps listed above work very, very well. Installed them in under an hour this past weekend (and I'm not a fast mechanic). Used 'em last night when the temperature was high 30s low 40s with a pair of unlined gloves and my hands were perfectly warm -- hot, even!

At least for now, I'm judging these things a fantastic buy for $50.

The only thing one needs to be careful of is that they're wired straight to the battery, so if you forget to turm them off, you'll have warm grips but a cold battery.

I've got the Rocket III heated grips on my Speedmaster. They look very similar to the regular grips, the three-way switch is next to the key. Hot-Off-Warm. I think they work very well. Of course I live in Texas, and we only have two real weeks of winter, but never-the-less. I love 'em. I am a diabetic and have some circulation loss in my extremities. These grips do the job for me.

What do they want for a set of those? Any mods other than the wiring required?

Let's hear more about the Rocket III grips, please.

Sorry, work keeps me busy. The grips are still working well, in fact on hot they can get uncomfortable down here. I did scrounge up the price, y'all aren't going to like it, but... $221 at my dealer. I don't know what he charged to install them. I got that and the light bar done before I picked up my sweetie. I think if you are comfortable taking your tank off and messing around with the wiring, it would be fairly easy to do. Not for me though. I know my limits all too well.
