Tom,

Without knowing your budget, tastes, and physical limits it would be difficult to recommend a bike. Personally I couldn't stand to be on a sport bike because of my bad knees, so I would be looking for something in a more UJM or standard riding position like one of those new Triumph Tigers or maybe a V-Strom. A bike is also such a personal choice. What one man finds ugly might appeal to another for it's utilitarian purpose.

I've been riding off and on for over 20 years and I think today we're in a golden age for choice of bikes. You can buy just about anything today...from retros to adventure bikes, dual sports to a 180+ mph ZX-14. So enjoy the experience of shopping for a bike. Sit on, and try to get a test ride on everything that appeals to you. Just remember that subtle changes in a bike's riding position can be changed. There's bar risers and customs seats, and other things to help make it more comfortable for you.
