It occurs to me now that the length of the horizontal piece is acting as a lever against the weld. If I try to do much standing on these, my glomoxness + x" of lever may = road debris.
For the function of standing, wider stock & maybe two bolts drilled throught the joint area for redundancy might be a good idea. I think they'll be fine as is strictly as foot rests though.
