I just bought some uni-pod intake filters from newspeedmaster.com - I put some on a Kawasaki 550 LTD years ago and they worked really well, added power and that cool sound of are sucking into the carbs! I'll learn as I go if I have to, but has anyone done this install? Anyone know of any written instructions? Is it advisable to keep the air box in place and modify it or just take it out?

Many many many have done airbox modification by cuting out the bottom inside of the box (inside the filter area only) and there are instructions all over here.
Also you can remove the whole box and go with the Freak Kit over at Newspedmaster.com. thats straight up K&N pod filters with the necessary brackets to keep some of the stray stock parts on your bike.

The most important thing, whichever route you go, is to support the carbs! Bellacorse sells a carb support brace (which I have) that works great.

I've got them. I found them easier to handle than the K&N- also a great filter. You do not want to remove the air box completly. As Reido113 says, some of your electrical mounts to it, but just as important, it block all the road crud from the rear tire. If you go to the FREAK- a great product, too- you will lose the chrome faux breather covers. I thought they were one of the cool parts of the bike, so I took a dremmel to my air box. It is wide open and I left the mounting points for the chrome covers. The bike rips with the mod. You will want to think about a rejet after the mod. One more thing- there is a sweet spot on the carbs where the filters sit- just play with it. It is pretty obivous where it is. If you miss it and overtighten the Uni's they will pop off. bennybmn is also correct about supporting the carbs. I'm cheap- I used a zip tie to the frame mount. I'll buy the rod end support this winter when I get the smooth bore 35's.

I was determined not to fork out $300 for the freak, so I purchased pod filters, a carb brace and a crankcase breather and created my own 'freak'. I dremeled out the airbox to make room for the filters. Also, on the left side I fashioned a piece of sheet metal to attach above the battery to smmooth out the appearance. Got rid of the cheese graters. I really like the raw look of the exposed pods. And I've been thinking about going to the UniPods for a change of pace.

Hey thanks everybody, very helpful info! Any pics of installed uni-pods and modified air boxes floating around?
Also, I may be selling my short factory backrest/sissy-bar/luggage rack soon. I'm going for a different look with a Corbin gunfighter and hard fiberglass or ABS saddle bags. Anyone interested?

I could probably take some of mine, but to really get a good idea on what to do and not do, you would need pics of the air box out of the bike, and those I do not have. Once you get the stock box out of the bike, It is obivous where to cut. I made a lazy 1st attempt, and tried to make the cuts with the box in the bike. Bad idea. I made some mistakes and really ugiled up the job, but it works. Plus, you can't get to even half the area to be cut. Take the air box out of the bike, put the cheese grators back on if you plan to keep them, and mark your cus with a greese pencil, then break out the demmel tool and open her up- it obivous where to cut. Take your time. You'll be left with an econo-FREAK, and have some storage under the seat. I keep my tire tire plug kit and Co2 air kit in there.

Wow, thanks for the great advice. I was contemplating in-bike air box surgery...probably could've gotten ugly! I'm looking forward to the extra storage space too. I think I would rather see the uni-pods than the cheesy graters though... So, "guitarted"...hmmm, might you be a fellow picker?

Mark, This is probably better suited for another forum, but I'm in good ol simple Fort Worth, Texas. I've played these- well one of them- at the guitar show in Dallas last year. Very nice. I immediatly notice the even volume it puts out hi E to low E. I play lefty now, so my selection is limited. I played righty for 8 years unitl I had an encounter with a saw blade. Still have all the digits, but learned to sling it lefty over the last 7 years. I can still pay either side, but stay left now. Yup, I am a student of the late great SRV. He touched a lot of folks. I used to hang out with Jimmy Vaughn, Delbert McClinton, and Buggs Henderson when they rolled through town. Thats the simple minimilist influences in my style.
