I have been riding 2 months now with about 1500 miles under my belt and this morning was an eye opener. I have read the statistics and been warned about how people don’t respect motorcyclist, but I have yet to see it personally until today. On my way to work I have to make a right hand turn from a 2 lane road onto a 4 lane highway. I have never caught the green light, so I always pull up to the right side of the lane and stop a little further ahead to get a good view of the on coming traffic to make a right on red or wait until it turns green.
Well as I approach the intersection, I see the light is red and I am coming to a stop and as I put my foot down I notice the light had changed. Then I had this feeling I need to look behind me. Sure enough this lady in a 06 black full size suburban pulls right beside me in my lane and makes a right turn right in front of me. First I was in disbelief and then I was pissed off. So I thought two things as I was pulling out, one I was on a 600 pound motorcycle and she was in some big massive SUV and second if I didn’t start thinking straight I was going to get killed at the next intersection.
Fortunately, I ride my bicycle everyday in traffic and I guess I have developed a sixth sense when riding in traffic. I am use to people passing me only inches away but that just went right through me. So from now on I am going to stay in the left or center lane when coming to intersection. I learned a lesson today, Dean

Dean,
Smart thinking to cool off, that's hard to do. I would still stay on the right side though to give you an escape route if need be. Is this wrong? If you're on the left side of the lane she could have just run over you and you would have no where to go but straight forward. our bikes don't make a very good traffic barricade. Fortunately the light was green and she was not trying to make a right-on-red. JMHO.

It sounds as though you are the first vehicle at the light....I had similar "incedents" as well.
Now when coming up to a stop where I will turn right, I stay to the left half of the lane coming to a stop, but when I stop I place the bike at an angle to take up more of the lane. I can still roll forward to see if I can make right on red, and it also puts me in a position to get out of the way without going straight into the intersection, if someone is bearing down on me from behind.

The Stebel air horn is a nice tool for this situation. Give them an earfull and wake them up!

If you are on the left they'll try and slip by on the right. I think a bootprint in her door was in order.
What I mostly see these days are people trying to lane change into me, and I'm not even in their blind spot!

I chased a guy who did that to me about 5 0r 6 miles once.....then thought to muself "Ok after you drag this guy out and beat him half to death....then what"?.....slowed down backed off and went about my bussiness.
Now i just do as you said...stay as close to the center as possible,but out of the greese spot.

Couple of months ago I was going down the road & up ahead there is an adjoining road coming in on the left. It looks like an upside down "Y" with a stop sign. Woman didn't even slow down & all of a sudden she is right beside me 6 inches away with me laying on the horn. About 1/4 mile up the road I blocked her, got off the bike, and asked her how many motorcyclists have to get killed before you people learn how to stop at a G_ _ Dam_ed stop sign?

I know what it means to be squeezed off in traffic, unfortunately its main road off my dead end street. Rt 202 CT. It narrows from two to one lane I wish I had a dollar for every car that passes me on the right just b4 road is one lane. One day I sped up to a BMW SUV said some not nice words and gave a hand salute, her response "What did I do" I kind of miss when I was in my 20's and would chase people down and scream at them for miles. One time in retrospect was somewhat funny. I was at a left turn signal, just pulled out to the left and zoom some as*^$ fly’s by blowing off the red light. I had to lay the bike down, I got up as quick as I could and attempted to race after the driver however, the shift lever had bent and would not let me shift out of first gear. One thing I and all of us must learn or develop is that 6th sense that DANGER IS NEAR. I often think of LOST IN SPACE ROBOT. Failing his arms DANGER, DANGER DANGER!!!. I don’t know who is the worst, SUV moms, women on cell phones or TRUCK drivers who ride your tail. One thing I have learned when merging on to the highway do not attempt to pull in front of a semi they will ride your ******. I often wish I could have a bag full of ball bearings or marbles and let out a few if some one is tailgating. My luck it would cause a major accident. Maybe some sand. RIDE SAFE!!!

Road rage is stupid. Let. It. Go. You have no idea if that other person is drunk, on pills, insane, or simply has nothing left to lose. Most of us have kids, family, friends, or others that would be sad to see us go. There is nothing to gain from road rage and everything to lose.

Or,
if you live where they don't drive on the wrong side of the road, Stay on the right and take up as much road as you can. Providing you can reach, you can kick their side mirror off. It's obvious they don't use it..
You are right about developing a sixth sense; I reckon mine has saved me a few times.
Of course it doesn't count when you do a left turn on a down sloping hill at too slow a speed and the road is wet and those super sticky tyres you paid too much for have no grip. (Another reason I traded my sports bike on my BA)

I took off my freeway blasters and replaced them with the Strebel once I'd heard it in person. Loud and obnoxious, as a horn should be. No melodious tones at all but definitely an attention getter.
