This is in reference to backfiring when the throttle is closed and decelling at higher RPM's. Not poping... Backfire. Boom. I think I stumbled across something and wonder what you think. (before I accept it as fact, although it has fixed mine) I think my idle was too low. So I turned it up a little bit and my backfire has yet to be heard again. Seems to make sense with the whole lean and then instantly rich thing that goes on here. Any thoughts?

I agree. Idle set too low does strange things, that's where throttle goes when you back off. Always kept mine a little low til I got a tach.

I would say it's entirely possible! if your idle was set very low the "lean" at throtle closed would be even worse...causing a very sporadic (if at all) fireing...which would cause a much larger build up of unburned gas to form and then BANG not pop...I find that it seems to run best at about 1100 +- the Triumph tach wont even register till 1000 so Im set to a point where the tach just starts to move...

I just got back from a hour test of my theory. Idle up an no bang. I dropped the idle a bit and BANG... There it was. Idle back up and nothing but love.

Where's your idle? Turns out my idle was actually high until I got a tach. I backed it down so when WARM it idles just a tick over 1000, and I get no backfiring, and hardly any popping.

A little OT, but idle related -- I had my idle down as low as possible without a stall, but in my opinion, that lead to hard starts when the engine was warm. I believe most hot or warm engines need just a drop or three of fuel when starting, but not enough to twist the throttle or pull the choke. I had one 4 stroke motorcycle years ago that even had a hot start position on the throttle, as does my Stihl 2 stroke chain saw, although I don't believe it is a good practice to touch the throttle at all during cold or warm starts with a modern Triumph engine. Anyway, when I turned the idle back up to around 1,000 or 1,100, all the hot start problems disappeared.

YES, this was another discovery I had bringin' my idle up. Well, when I uped to 45 pilots (after gutting stockers) the hard start went away too, but now... A lot easier and I didn't think that was possible. Also rumbles a 'Lil better at idle now. Ohh Hooo I'm tough now.. Watch out!

Any ideas how this mounts into the dash? It's not plug and go I presume, wiring not a problem here.
...Duhh I just seen the link at fasteddies.
the $54 price at http://www.oneidasuzuki.com/store/parts-accessories/drag-specialties-mini-8000-rpm-tachometer.html
is hard to beat. Is FastEddie a reg supporter here?

There have been a few threads on the topic. I've only seen the one recently IN the dash, which is quite slick.

I put mine in the dash. Neat and clean installation, not in line of sight when riding. Hit rev limiter today while passing 2 cars. One of these days I'll move it up where it belongs.

Yeah, I only want it for "tuning" purposes. I won't throw the clamp away I swear.

I still have the clamp for mine if you need it I only used the triangular mounting plate it came with and then made another little tab to mount it to the tree.
