I would say it's entirely possible! if your idle was set very low the "lean" at throtle closed would be even worse...causing a very sporadic (if at all) fireing...which would cause a much larger build up of unburned gas to form and then BANG not pop...I find that it seems to run best at about 1100 +- the Triumph tach wont even register till 1000 so Im set to a point where the tach just starts to move...
