For those in the Sunshine State
Mark
Please make note of the following changes effective October 1, 2006:

A charge of exceeding the speed limit by 30 mph or more will require a
mandatory hearing. The individual will not be permitted to elect
traffic school.

A new statute of 316.1893(5) Enhanced Penalty Zones is being created in
order to accommodate the assessment of the additional $50.00 when cited
for unlawful speed in specifically marked zones.

A new statute of 316.189(5) F.S. Enhanced Penalty Zone was created
during the 2006 legislative session to accommodate the issuance of
citations in designated enhanced penalty zone s in Brevard, Duval, and
Palm Beach Counties as a pilot program in an effort to reduce speeding
related crashes on state roads. According to Chris Cairnes at the
Department of Transportation (D.O. T.), the enhanced penalty zone in
Brevard County has been identified as I-95 from S.R. 528 north to the
Brevard/Volusia County line. Signs have been ordered by D.O.T. from one
vendor to ensure that all three counties post the same official signs.
This statute can only be used in designated enhanced penalty zones after
the signs are in place.

ENHANCED SPEEDING FINES
$111.50 1 to 5 miles over limit
$136.50 6 to 9 miles over limit
$211.50 10 to 14 miles over limit
$236.50 15 to 19 miles over limit
$261.50 20 to 29 miles over limit

Great. I'm heading up to the mountains a week from Friday. Guess I'll watch for those signs and maybe slow down a little. Definitely keep the detector up and running...

Somehow I bet running red lights, failure to yield, illegal lane changes and running over motorcycle fines have not changed. Idiots! Speed does not, and has never, killed. Stupidity, timidity and indecision kill. The unlimited speed Autobahns are the safest roads in the world but we in the US, who guard our rights and freedoms more fiercely than anyone else, are happy to set our speed limits to please old aunt Clara. I believe speed limits are often much less about safety than they are about control.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

I have a great rental van slow speed fender-bender story that occurred in Orlando circa 1985 involving some folks from Utah, a slightly inebriated guy from North Dakota, a Florida patrolman and me again playing the role of the "voice of reason". Scene one took place in a 7-11 parking lot, scene two three hours later in a motel parking lot. The punch line was the patrolman asking me "Do You know that guy?". Cracks me up everytime

The thing is, speed is easily measured and ticketed. Max revenue for a minimum of work.

What I wonder is why fines are always such wierd amounts. Why do politicians pick something like $67.42 instead of $65 or $70?

Also note, in CA there is a "penalty assessment" added to fines on the order of 200, maybe 250%. So, a $100 fine really costs you $300 or $350.
