I bought a '02 Triumph. I did not like the put put sound. I took (busted) all of the inside of the mufflers out. Well after that I found out that my pilot jet was pluged tighter than .. Well lets just say it was pluged very bad. It took me 3 cleaning tips and 4 sewing needles to get it unpluged. Well after that it backfired like hell! I read around (on this forum and found that I could adjust the idle mixture screw. Well in the US they have the "Saftey pluges". I think this is to keep us Rednecks from blowing ourselfs and our bikes up. I was trying to remove the "plug" and I bussed the houseing for the screw and the screw itself. So here I am in Evanston WY. Where we only have summer weather for 3 weeks! and I have been working on it for 2 now. My baby is broke! I wanted to put carbs on it and I ordered the CR-II carbs. I have not installed them yet but I was wondering if anyone has put these on a '02 TBA. How does it run? Also I would like to remove the AI. Will this stop my "Blue" pipes? Where can I get something to remove the "Blue" and if I do get it removed will it stay gone? Also I have removed the airbox but dont have the money to get the FREAK. Is there anything I can do besides cut the airbox?
Thanks for everything You guys are GREAT I have been reading this forum for 3 weeks now! Keep up the good work!

Hi, have got CRS carbs on my Speedmaster, and finally hammered out to decent tune. I'll bet money that they're over-jetted from wherever you got them, when I added the Freak K&N Air Filters, the things were still running rich. Tuned, the things are awesome, they can really wake that engine up. The only minor headache with them is the lack of an accelerator circuit, which means that at lower RPM's the carbs don't do well at all with a sudden large throttle transition; now if you roll into the throttle, then they do great. Getting rid of the AI will definitely help your exhaust. There's some kind of polish that will help ameliorate your blue-ing. Good luck on your mods!!!

If you don't mind not having side covers you can get away with just getting the K&N filters and a carb brace and heavy duty intace couplers probably... I think the bluing stuff is called Blue Job or something to that effect...

Thanks guys! Now I am not much of a mechanic and never clamed to be. How do I tell if the carbs are running rich or lean?

Just ease out the choke a *LITTLE* while riding with the engine warmed up. If it runs better, you are too lean. If it doesn't run better, push it back in, ride for about 20 minutes or so with the engine running above 3500 RPM (use a lower gear if you need to), grab the clutch and shut down the engine and coast to a stop in a safe spot on the side of the road. Let it cool down enough you won't fry your hands and take out the sparkplugs. If they have a fluffy looking blackish coating, it is too rich. You have to check both plugs because there could be a difference between the left and right cylinders.

I also used alotta audible clues with my carbs: If things were backfiring through the air filters, then I was running too lean, if I was getting loud popping noises (along with puffs of black smoke) then was definitely too rich. But yes, the spark plugs are probably the best indication of how you're running. Another indication was how the engine reacted coming off of idle, if there was a little interval of no real power, and funky sounds outta the pipes, then the sucker were off, there should hardly be any transition from idle to good power.

I meant to say loud popping noises out of the mufflers, sorry about that!
