I'm in progress of getting rid of the airbox (having a bracket made for the right side cover) and adding K&N filters. My 865 came stock with 16/42 but I soon put on the Thunderbikes and 17T front. Now with my current setup (130 mains, drilled airbox, TBS needles) I'm loving that 17T sprocket. I'll probably keep it on even after dumping the airbox, just to keep that little extra torque.

Don't get me wrong - my 790 handled the 18t well enough. No question I would have replaced it with another if I could have ordered the chain set with it. I don't "race" up the street in first gear anymore, because the 17t just isn't tall enough. So I either upshift to 2nd, or I cool it in 1st to the stop sign. I miss that, and winding it up in 2nd or 3rd without feeling the need to upshift all the time.

If I had the 865 motor, I would put the 18t back on in a heartbeat.

You answered one question though. Not all the 865's came with 18t sprockets! I wonder if there is a production "break" somewhere (serial numbers?) that TRIUMPH could say those manufactured before this date had 16t, (or 17t, on the America), and after this date a SM or America would have the bigger sprocket. I guess we may still be assuming the new Americas have the 18t since they now have the 865? Has it ever been confirmed?
