Heat shrink is the way to go if you are cutting any of the wires. Thing is, in theory you don't need to, you just need to take the signal wires out of the loom, so that means you would have to slide a very large piece of shrink down over the entire thing and it would be hard to get it to shrink enough. But yeah, heat shrink is a must for any cutting/splicing/soldering.
