Does anyone own one of these?

HCI Retro 50

Supposedly DOT approved. A fraction of the cost of a Davida Classic. Owners: What do you think? Don't want to get into a 1/2-shell, 3/4-shell, full-face debate.

Thanks,

Tom

No, but it's the answer to my prayers and I'll have one shortly. Its the first retro lid that comes close to the Davida for a price that is reasonable.

Shoot, just spent $150 on a new Scorpion 3/4 face. Oh well, I wanted a shield for the cooler months. That does look pretty cool.

LOL. I can relate, last weekend I bought some stuff from that 50% sale (assuming it does actually ship...) and this past week purchased some motorcycle boots from eBay.

Next on my list is some Wiley X glasses and now this. Jeez, doesn't it ever end???

My hope is they will be paintable since they're fiberglass. I have a friend who does excellent air brush work I'd like to duplicate my tank paint scheme - maybe even painted Triumph badges on the side.

These folks are selling the helmet for $49.99 + $10.00 for shipping. No tax if out of state:

mmleather

I couldn't find the helmet on their www, but you can call them at: 910-487-6151 and speak with the only person that has a clue (Mary).

My standard disclaimer:

This is for your consideration, not recommendation. Caveat emptor. I'm not affiliated with these folks, nor have I had any previous dealings with them.

Here's a 3/4 with the Union Jack. No personal experience with it.

Talk about fast processing and shipping. Helmet came today. Ordered on 02/13, arrived on 02/16.

By the wieght and feel of it, I'm surprised it meets or exceeds DOT standards. It's closer to a novelty helmet in my opinion.

Tom,
Let me know how it fits compared to the measurement you took, and/or compared to previous same size purchase. I have a HCI 1/2 helmet (style40, I believe). It is a medium and uses the same size chart. The one I have fits pretty nicely. I just want to be as sure as I can before ordering - I hate buying sized merchandise via the net. I have some bad luck with that.

Thanks,
Barry

Barry,

I've a pretty big mis-shapen (think Peter Doyle in Young Frankenstein) noggin' at 24"/61cm. Their XXL fits me better than the Shoei St Cruz I normally wear.

The liner in the HCI is in fact EPS [Expanded Polystyrene (styrofoam)]. I'm betting the Shoei offers better protection.

If you plan to follow through with ordering, I suggest the second link I mentioned above, not the first. This will save you at least $20. You'll have to order by phone though. Make sure you talk to Mary. The first couple of folks I talked with didn't have a clue.

Regards,

Tom

Thanks, Tom. And good luck with that head of yours. It sounds to be quite a conversation starter. I'd just about bet if they stuck my nose on your head, the two would look nearly proportional

Yes-that is an AF lid not an HCI which is painted with a rebel flag design over the whole helmet like the Davida. That is what I would like to have.
BTW-the pudding basin HCL retro 50 came and it is cool ! So did the rebel flag 3/4-they are just a bit tight for me but wearable-I wear a 61cm or 24" Xl and these are tight. The 50 is the black flames on flat black and with my Davida mask and Goggles I look like a space man form the 50's. GREAT!.

Thats a good looking helmet! What material are the ear pads made from? Are they removable? A quick connect and removable chin pad would be nice

KP,
Pads are pure, 100% Asian Vinyl - no doubt 'organic'. They are not removable, but, I must say they fit more appropriately than any helmet I own. The lid is very light and the outside dimensions are very small. I’m please so far with the one I have, although I question the ‘safety factor’ due to the thinness of the padding. It says “DOT”, but is probably not the safest helmet on the market. It does look as close to a Davida as the pictures indicate – very retro. I find it to look most ‘dashing’ with a pair of goggles. Now all I need is the silk scarf.

Received a Retro 50 HCI yesterday from Jafrum.com. Excellent service and at a price of $39.95 + $6.75 shipping, very reasonable. I actually read and followed the sizing instructions and I suggest you do also as they run smallish and an XL fitted me well as opposed to L from Shoei, etc that I usually wear.
As others noted, it's as close to a Davidia in looks as you can get. Very dashing indeed, particularly with goggles.
Retro helmet, retro TBA...excellent!

I think I'll have to find a dealer that sells HJC Half helmets and try one on, even tho I know it's a different style. My shorty is an XL, whereas my full face is an XXXL... So I don't trust sizing charts Altho I really like those helmets! Great bike night helmet. It's a mide down the road for me, and I spend more time walking around, easier to carry!

That's an HCI not HJC for the Retro 50
so sizing will be different.

Benny what hat size do you usually wear, I wear a 7 3/4 hat and the XL HCI fits me, I got two. I cut my hair relatively short which makes a difference, but I didn't think anyone had a larger head than me.

You must not have been around for my helmet shopping woes

My full face is a XXXL Scorpion. My fitted cap is a 7-7/8 and is a tad snug. My hair is fairly short, altho not a buzzcut or anything. Also, my head is a long oval shape which firther complicated things. I looked at their sizing chart and I'm thinkin a XXL might do it. I tend to fit shorties easier than full face because the big knob of a lower-rear skull I have doesn't come into play.

Benny. I got mine at Jaffrum. Same price as HCI. No hassles & Speedy delivery. I always swore I'd never buy a lid over the net for size issues - The size chart seems spot-on.

I've had the jafrum site up for a couple hours now thinking about hitting the go-button... Can't beat that price! I think I should be good with a 2XL. Do you know if they have a good return policy?

OK got my answer...

Let me know what size you got and how it fits. I shave my head and wear a fitted size 8 hat.

Go figure.

I was thinking of ordering a 2X, their biggest... I'm sure I could unload it in the classifieds if it didn't work out.
