I'm looking at a used one. I love diesel but can't justify the cost of a new giant pickup. Anyone get one of these or know someone with one?

Dill,
Get one and turn it into an alternative fuel burner. You'll smell like a big french fry going down the road.

Went to the Jeep website. Just as I thought, the diesel engine is not offered in the 07 Libertys but is offered in the 07 Grand Cherokee. But I have heard that the 4 cylinder diesel was pretty rugged. I belive it is still sold in other countries. Don't know about mileage ratings.

dill, from everything I've read, it should be a good engine, but is a bit rough around the edges. It was basically a Detroit Diesel from DD's Italian division (which DaimlerChrysler bought out). Really more designed for delivery trucks than something like the Liberty, but is good on gas I believe. BUT, I'd wait till the new ones come out if you can. There is a BIG push right now for 2007 to go over to a new Turbo design with ball bearings instead of the old journal bearings, and intel so far says that on commercial diesels the lifetime will double or triple(don't ask me how I know). This new ball bearing design (which is alredy used in VERY low volumes in racing engines-like the Audi Racing Diesel that won at LeMans this year!) was brought up specifically to meet the new 2007 Diesel Emissions standards (which is why there is a shortage of companies out there with diesels for 2007), and the byproduct of this design change is MUCH better service life.... One of the leaders onto the market with this will be a company well known for large yellow earth moving equipment who shall remain nameless....

Just as a point of interest, the diesel-engined (2.7L) Grand Cherokees that come to Greece have Mercedes engines. I drove one for a whole day in December and was impressed by the performance and amazing fuel consumption of the relatively small displacement engine.

Dill I spent a LOT of time over at a Liberty forum ( LOST ) and those guys love their oil burners. I had a regular V6 in mine, and honestly I really liked that rig! I may look at them once I get rid of the company car. It's light for a 4X4, park it easily, tall but not too tall, the rear glass opens so you can haul lumber out the back, and you can actually go offroading in it. I put a set of Dueler Revos on it and it was basically unstoppable in the snow, as long as you are aware of it's heft, like any car in the snow... Go check out that forum for more details. They'll tell ya if it sucks. And a LOT of them are in the northeast. I took mine wheelin up around Laconia. Got some excellent pics too
As for the new deisel, it's a different animal, a Mercedes V6 I think as opposed to the I4. It'll be a while before it gets in the Liberty... I think if you can find one, they are a great buy. Oh and the Liberty gets awesome crash test ratings too, and I heard of guys who flipped them and walked away.

Well I have found a few 05s with real low miles for sale. I mean 10-15k. This has peaked my interest. Why sell a vehicle with that low mileage? But on the other hand I love to burn oil. I have a TDI jetta, I'm looking to put a TDI into my Suzuki sidekick off road machine. But I just can't convince myself, let alone the wife. To spend 30-40 on a big honkin truck just to get a diesel. The grand cherokees coming to the states are getting a 3.0 V6 CRD. The dealer said he could order one, but the 36k price tag, I said thanks but no thanks. Benny; is there plenty of room for you? I don't know if you have a dog. But I need a vehicle that can haul me, the wife, the gherkin, and the polar bear. Beudion, the availability of awesome diesels in Europe drives me nuts over here. I would love a diesel audi, but no can do in the states. If there is one thing I like about the whole Dailmer Chrsyler merge its the diesel push. They are the future. Heck I would look into a diesel bike if they would sell one. (there now we can talk about bikes and slightly back on topic.)

Dill, at the time I got my Jeep, Kim had an Xterra, which a LOT of people consider competition. The difference was that hers was longer, but the floor was a LOT higher cause of the ladder frame. The liberty felt a LOT more nimble than the big X. So as for space, the area behind the rear seat wasn't terribly long front to back, but it was ok. The seats fold real easy too. People liked the rear seat comfort wise, and I liked the front, but there's not a whole lot of adjustment, so make sure YOU fit the seat. I managed to pile a lot of stuff in there. I have an amp that is a 4X10, so it is at least two feet tall, and I could lay it down in the back. I think it is a very efficient use of space honestly.
Oh and I still have the rear cargo cover from mine, so don't pay extra for one, you can have mine...

Dill, tell me about it! Every time I have to go to Germany, I ask for a VW or Audi TDI, and when I am really lucky, I get one of the TDI's with the red DI and the 6-speed manual gearbox!! Talk about a screamer and fun to drive (but still gets about 30mpg at over 100mph on the Autobahn!) Just wish for once they would lock all of the beancounters in a dark closet at VW and do what the engineers would do if given the chance!!! Really pissed me off when I bought my Passat back in '00, I wanted the TDI (don't get me wrong, I love the 1.8T too!) instead, but it wasn't an option, and a year after I bought it, they brought the TDI Passats over, but only with auto trannies of course(although I have to say the new 6-speed Tiptronic gearbox is one sweet auto and I can forgive them for that!!)

We test drove a TDI passat, you didn't miss much. Its a much heavier car than a jetta so even with the larger motor it felt underpowered. Of course they would only make it with the triptronic, which was a major flaw in my eyes. You should be able to row through a vw gearbox. Heck thats about the only thing that made my rabbit fun. The beancounters are unreal, you can buy a 4motion jetta, you can buy a tdi jetta, but you can't check off both boxes on one order.

Since when did they make a 4motion Jetta?!?! that's cool. A tiptronic is still an auto. My Charger has one sorta, it still makes up its own mind most of the time... I miss my Jetta

Sorry Benny I was wrong. They put it in the Passat but only non diesel. They put 4motion in the R32, basically a super GTI. But never in the jetta in North America, only in Europe.

I could swear I've seen a 4motion Jetta. Maybe it was a Passat.

IT was either a Passat, an aftermaket job, or just a decal The company that does a super R32 does JEtta conversions too. I would LOVE to have a Jetta done up like an R32. Talk about sleeper...
