Will powder-coat hold up to the heat that mufflers put out or do I need to go with something different, like Jet-Hot? Does anyone know a good alternative to Jet-Hot?

I believe Jet-Hot uses ceramic coatings.

VHT makes a header/exhaust coating that works well if applied according to their instructions. I've used it on a Honda exhaust and it's holding up well 1 1/2 years later. I got some from O'Reilly auto parts. The application is kinda a pain: spray, bake, cool, bake again, repeat 3x, and so on.

I'm looking to coat the pipes on my Thruxton. With all the research I did, I agree with JR. Correct me if I'm wrong, but ceramic coating seems to be a heavier, more durable coating. The big plus is that ceramic disperses much more heat from the pipes than powder will, resulting in less hot air being pulled back into the engine meaning a cooler and more efficient engine.

I've talked to a number of guys who've used BBQ paint... not glamorous, but hey -- gets the job done.

I guess I'm leaning towards the VHT option. I asked Jet-Hot for a quote but I have a feeling it's going to be spendy. And this is definitely a budget project.

I used the high temp powder coat on Epco's and its starting to peel and flake. I going to strip them and try ceramic coat.

The BBQ paint will work, but I'm not sure how long it will last. My petcock leaked and the gas ate right through the paint. I had only had the pipes painted for a couple of days when it happened. I yanked them back off. That wasn't a happy morning for me....

Learning from my mistakes... again and again.

why would you want to coat pipes on a Thruxton?? part of the beauty about them is the multi-color on the pipes.

we should do this every weekend!

I had painted my bonnies head pipes and cans with bbq black, held up for 9k miles last season just fine. Easy to touchup as well. I recently tore the bike down to make some modification's and had a ton of stuff powdercoated.

Including the pipes and cans with a 1000* hightemp coating. Someone else around here has done this with success...hoping for the same.

Well, I got a box from Jet-Hot today. I asked for an estimate and it came with a video and a bunch of marketing materials. Oh yeah, and the estimate. $130 to do both mufflers. Not bad. Not sure if that includes stripping the chrome and light rust off or not. That's significantly cheaper than I was expecting. I'm seriously considering it now.

Have a link you can share? Now I'm curious too.
