Hello First start of my SM engine with 360 deg crank was successful I used crank cases, barrels and head from SM and all internals from standard bonneville engine. It was quite easy job to do. All parts fit straight on. Only problem was that I did't realised that standard bonneville has only 1 coil. Though I used standard bonneville ignition box only 1 coil got signal. Problem was solved to connect SM coils negative terminal together. Next job is 21" front rim, to make new front fender, paint rims and maybe make new gas tank (If I have time). One good thing of having long winters Jani

Sounds as though you know what you are doing Jani, you should post photos as you go through the stages of build.

Makes sense that they'd only use one coil on a 360 degree motor as they're firing together. I'm guessing it has a wasted spark? (eg: the spark plugs fire twice as often as they need to, on both compression and exhaust strokes?) You could save a little weight/space and simplify it by using a bonneville single coil, but the twin coils will probably give you a stronger spark (and an extra item to fail when you least expect it).
I'm hoping you'll put it on a dyno when you're done, will be interesting to compare the results to a 270 degree motor.
Are you planning to lower the front end to compensate for the taller geometry of bike with the 21" rim? While I'm on the topic, do you feel like selling me your standard 18" rim for a project I'm playing with?
Looking forward to seeing pics of the finished item.

Thanks for your comments I will post pictures as soon I get my 21" front wheel and fender installed. I ordered the rim today and they said that delivery time is about 3 weeks. Dyno run is on the to do list Head is also ported so I'm eager to see the results. I have allready lowered front end 1" but I might lower it bit more, not sure yet. Matt I can sell you my original wheel but delivery to you could be quite expensive. I can ask the price if you like. Regards, Jani

Can I ask why you're converting from 270 to 360? I'm just curious as to why someone would go to such lengths to convert to a standard bonneville crank and timing. What benefit do you expect to gain from this conversion?

Also, how does the price compare to just buying a 360 motor and changing out the cases?

from what i understand the 270 is just as good if not better, i know that the 270 is used for the flat track raceing. it comes down to how the power comes on rather than how mch power they make. or i am totally wrong

Bottom line is the cat doesn't need a reason other than "I want to" but it would be interesting to find out

He absolutely doesn't need a reason. Maybe he just likes being different. The sound will be different anyway.

Well, there was two reasons to do this mod. First was that engine problems that I had with original unit, Triumph nor I just could not get sorted out. They really did they best, even dismantle the engine. I also check the engine really carefully when I dismantle it but I could not find anything wrong with it. Root cause was probably assembly error in clutch from factory which Triumph did repair, but bad vibration that it caused did not get fixed. Second reason was that I really like the sound from 360 engine. It just sounds like old brit bikes . I bought used standard bonneville engine from UK and used it's internal parts. I did't want to just swap engines because black engine just look's so right in SM and I was interested to see the engine design. I did consider to get another bike. I tested Rocket3 and HD Street Glide but after that test I realised just how good bike the SM and Bonneville family in general is. Regards, Jani

Hello Here is the pictures of my project http://www.bonnevilleamerica.com/photopost/data/500/321mp-kuvia_019.jpghttp://www.bonnevilleamerica.com/photopo...=500&page=1 http://www.bonnevilleamerica.com/photopo...=500&page=1The 360 engine is working really good. Dyno run is still to come and I will post results here then. I have just started motorcycle/metal fabrication company called Polameri Metal Works specializing to Bonneville family. My plan is to start making fenders, tanks etc. for Bonnevilles from metal and aluminum and some other special parts too. I will also do service and tuning jobs. Url is www.polameri.com but it's not active yet. I will post info when web pages are ready. First examples are the front fender and rear shock "shield" made from solid steel bar. Bike is not nearly finished (are they ever ) Next job is new tank, seat, rear fender and front fender from aluminium. Best regards, Jani

Like it so far. I thinking of powder coating my lower legs and trees black with polished shrouds. Powder coating wheels too maybe.
